“Sir, if you wish to have a just notion of the magnitude of this city [London], you must not be satisfied with seeing its great streets and squares, but must survey the innumerable little lanes and courts.”

Samuel Johnson, 1777

Samuel Johnson’s timeless wisdom from 1777 still rings true, especially for those seeking an authentic and inspiring London experience. My approach to travel has always been one of curiosity and discovery, veering away from the typical tourist routes. On my inaugural visit to London after college, a memorable encounter at the Tower of London cemented this philosophy. Standing amidst a crowd marveling at the crown jewels, I found myself next to a woman from Milwaukee. While pleasant, the realization struck me: I hadn’t journeyed 5,000 miles across the Atlantic to simply replicate interactions I could have back home. It was in that moment that my travel ethos solidified: seek out the extraordinary, the less-traveled, and the truly unique.

Since then, my explorations of London have consistently led me off the beaten path. While I appreciate the grandeur of department stores like Harrods and Selfridges, my true delight lies in uncovering the city’s artisanal heart. You’re more likely to find me at the historic 300-year-old cheesemonger Paxton and Whitfield, exploring the vibrant Borough Market, diving into the eclectic energy of Camden, or immersing myself in the refined design districts along King’s Road and Fulham Road. Each trip is an adventure into a new direction, a quest for novel experiences and inspiring finds. Guided tours are not for me; I prefer the thrill of personal discovery and the joy of stumbling upon hidden gems.

My most recent London excursion was a testament to this philosophy. It involved a clandestine ascent into Liberty’s attic, where I rummaged through rolls of exquisite wallpaper, a pilgrimage to Beardmore in search of distinctive drawer pulls, and an investigation into an intriguing online find: C.P. Hart, a name synonymous with luxury bathroom fittings. I also made a swift, awe-struck dash into Linley, allowing myself to luxuriate in the presence of jaw-dropping bespoke cabinetry and furniture. Each visit was a catalyst, sparking countless ideas and filling my creative reservoir. And now, brimming with inspiration, I’m eager to share these incredible discoveries with you.
