An Exclusive Interview with Dallas’s Rising Real Estate Star: Amy Messer
From Lubbock to Loving Dallas: Amy’s Journey into Real Estate
daltxrealestate.com: Amy, let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us where you’re originally from?
Amy Messer: I grew up in Lubbock, Texas, a place with its own distinct charm. However, in 2001, I made the pivotal decision to move to Dallas to attend SMU. It was here that I truly fell in love—not just with the vibrant university life, but with the city itself. Dallas captivated me, and it has proudly been my cherished home ever since. The city’s energy, opportunities, and diverse culture truly resonated with me, making it an easy choice to put down roots here.
daltxrealestate.com: Your passion for real estate is evident. How did you first get into the industry, and what areas or types of properties do you specialize in within Dallas?
Amy Messer: My love for real estate and design isn’t new; it’s something that developed organically from a very young age. I vividly remember my mother constantly rearranging furniture and embarking on various remodeling projects around our house when I was little. This early exposure, observing the transformative power of design and space, somehow ignited an obsession within me. That fascination reached a new level when I bought my first house at 24. I was completely hooked by the process – the search, the vision, the investment. It was my broker, Kerry Paradise Slaughter, who initially listed that first home for me, and she saw the burgeoning potential in my excitement. She was instrumental in encouraging me to pursue a career as an agent, and honestly, it felt like a match made in career heaven. I genuinely cannot imagine doing anything else; this profession truly aligns with my core passions.
As for my specialization, while I proudly serve all of Dallas, I naturally gravitate towards and focus heavily on the wonderfully unique areas of East Dallas, the charming M Streets, and the highly sought-after Lakewood neighborhoods. These areas offer a fantastic blend of historic charm, community spirit, and desirable properties. Additionally, I also frequently work within the vibrant Oak Lawn and the culturally rich Oak Cliff areas, both of which offer their own distinct appeals and opportunities for buyers and sellers alike. My deep local knowledge across these diverse pockets of Dallas allows me to provide truly tailored and insightful guidance to my clients.
Staying Ahead in a Challenging Market: Amy’s Unwavering Dedication
daltxrealestate.com: The real estate market can be incredibly challenging and constantly shifting. How do you manage to stay sharp and effective for your clients in such a dynamic environment?
Amy Messer: Honestly, my espresso machine plays a significant role in keeping me going! But beyond that, my clients are incredibly fortunate because I genuinely have a hard time ‘turning off’ when it comes to my work. I believe in giving 110% to everything I do; I never do anything halfway. My job isn’t just a profession; it’s an obsession. This means I’m constantly engaged, often working around the clock, 24/7, to ensure my clients’ needs are not just met, but exceeded. This relentless dedication allows me to stay on top of market trends, new listings, and client communications, ensuring they always receive the most up-to-date information and the most proactive service possible. It’s this deep-seated commitment that truly helps me navigate and excel in even the most challenging market conditions.
daltxrealestate.com: Where do you call home within the vast expanse of Dallas?
Amy Messer: I am incredibly lucky to live in what I consider the most magical neighborhood in all of Dallas—Easton Place! For any readers unfamiliar with it, my home is a beautiful late 70s contemporary style, nestled perfectly amidst a serene landscape of mature trees and rolling hills. It’s a true oasis, offering a perfect blend of architectural character and natural beauty, providing a wonderful retreat after a busy day in the city.
daltxrealestate.com: And you drive a… let me hazard a guess, a sophisticated Range Rover?
Amy Messer: Interestingly, I actually drive a BMW! I confess, I have a bit of a need for speed, which, unfortunately, sometimes translates into accumulating speeding tickets. While a BMW suits my practical needs, in a perfect world, my heart truly yearns for an El Camino. However, my clients tend to have strong objections to riding in the back, which makes it a rather impractical choice for a professional realtor! So, for now, the BMW keeps pace with my fast-moving lifestyle.
Exploring Dallas: Amy’s Favorite Neighborhoods and Their Unique Charms
daltxrealestate.com: With your extensive knowledge of the city, what would you say is your absolute favorite neighborhood in Dallas, and what makes it stand out?
Amy Messer: It’s incredibly tough to pick just one, as I genuinely adore all parts of Dallas for their distinct character. However, if I had to narrow it down, my absolute favorites would be East Dallas, the vibrant Lower Greenville/M Streets corridor, the historic and artistic Deep Ellum, and the incredibly diverse Oak Cliff. What draws me to each of these areas is their palpable sense of identity and community. Each neighborhood truly embodies a strong sense of self; they authentically know who they are and what unique contributions they offer to the greater Dallas community. I am particularly captivated by the eclectic array of homes you find in these areas, from charming bungalows to modern masterpieces. The walkability is also a huge draw, fostering a sense of connection and encouraging residents to explore their surroundings on foot. Most importantly, I cherish the distinct feeling of belonging that resonates within each of these vibrant ‘hoods. They’re not just places to live; they’re communities where people truly connect and thrive.
Client Successes and Unforgettable Transactions
daltxrealestate.com: Every agent has those standout moments. What was your most rewarding or highest-value sale to date?
Amy Messer: My most rewarding sale was undoubtedly a stunning modern home located on Madera. It presented a series of unique challenges throughout the process, demanding creativity and perseverance. Yet, overcoming those obstacles was incredibly satisfying, and the best part was that those clients transformed into two of my closest friends. These are, without a doubt, the best kinds of deals—transactions that transcend business and cultivate genuine, lasting relationships. I am incredibly thankful for a job that allows me to forge such meaningful connections with the people I work with.
daltxrealestate.com: On the flip side, what has been your most challenging or perhaps most memorable transaction?
Amy Messer: It might sound cliché, but for me, truly every single deal is memorable in its own way. I absolutely love being an integral part of such a significant next step in my clients’ lives, whether they’re buying their first home or finding their dream property. Each journey is unique and special. Oh, and then there was that one unforgettable transaction that involved a goat… but we’ll save that story for another time!
daltxrealestate.com: Way to leave us on a cliffhanger, Amy! Building on memorable experiences, what’s the most interesting or unusual thing that has happened to you while working with a client?
Amy Messer: I’ve had the pleasure of working with two different clients who happen to be in the liquor and wine representation industry. Let me just say, having a case or two of fine wine occasionally delivered during a particularly complex or challenging deal can make the intricate process just a little bit more bearable and certainly adds a unique, convivial touch to the client relationship. It’s a testament to the diverse and interesting individuals you meet in this profession!
Pacing, Performance, and Proactive Advice
daltxrealestate.com: Efficiency is key in real estate. What’s the fastest you’ve ever managed to turn a house from listing to contract?
Amy Messer: I pride myself on efficiency and understanding market demand. My very first listing, which was a significant milestone for me, was under contract in an incredibly swift two days. This rapid turnaround showcased not only my strategic approach to marketing and pricing but also the immediate appeal of the property and my ability to connect the right buyer with their ideal home quickly. It set a high bar for my commitment to getting results for my clients.
daltxrealestate.com: That’s impressive! Can you share your sales volume from last year?
Amy Messer: Last year, which was my inaugural year in real estate, I successfully closed around $3 million in sales. While that was a solid start, I am eagerly anticipating and working towards achieving a significantly larger number for 2015 and beyond. My ambition is matched only by my dedication to my clients and my growing expertise in the Dallas market, ensuring continuous growth and greater success in the years to come.
daltxrealestate.com: What essential words of wisdom do you frequently impart to your clients?
Amy Messer: One piece of advice I consistently share with my clients is simple yet profound: “I am the expert, so you don’t have to be.” In this digital age, with the overwhelming onslaught of online listings and an endless stream of real estate information readily available, there’s an increased, often unnecessary, pressure for clients to become super knowledgeable themselves. Frankly, ain’t nobody got time for that level of exhaustive research. That’s precisely what I’m here for. My role is to sift through the noise, distill the essential information, and provide expert guidance and support, allowing my clients to relax and trust that their real estate journey is in capable hands. I handle the complexities so they can focus on their lives, confident in my professional insights.
A Future Rooted in Real Estate (and Tacos!)
daltxrealestate.com: If you were ever to change careers for an encore, what would you envision yourself doing?
Amy Messer: Honestly, I literally cannot imagine doing anything else. This isn’t just a job; it’s truly my calling. My passion for connecting people with their dream homes and navigating the intricate world of real estate is so profound that I don’t believe I’ve acquired any other skills in life that would bring me this much satisfaction or success. My career in real estate is where I belong, and where I thrive.
daltxrealestate.com: And finally, do you have a second home, perhaps for weekend escapes?
Amy Messer: Absolutely! My unofficial second home, and a truly beloved sanctuary, is none other than Taco Joint. It’s the perfect place to unwind, recharge, and enjoy some of Dallas’s best culinary delights after a busy week of helping clients find their own dream homes.
