Unveiling the Penthouse Plunge: A Dallas Luxury Renovation Journey
The vision for the A-unit of the “Penthouse Plunge” renovation project is rapidly taking shape as the framing phase nears completion. For those just joining this exciting journey, this installment chronicles the intricate and often extraordinary process of transforming a double penthouse at the prestigious Claridge on Turtle Creek into two distinct, high-end residences. My personal quest involves separating these expansive units, thoroughly gutting and revitalizing the corner A-unit, and ultimately making the adjacent unit my own residence, with plans for its future renovation.
The Structural Milestone: Framing Progress and Design Realization
Framing represents a pivotal and highly anticipated stage in any major renovation, particularly within a luxury high-rise setting. It’s the point where architectural drawings and abstract design concepts begin to manifest as tangible spaces, allowing us to walk through the future layout and truly envision the flow of rooms. This critical phase dictates the precise dimensions for crucial elements like built-in cabinetry, an item notoriously known for its extensive lead times, often spanning between two and four months. Over the recent holiday period, I’ve dedicated considerable time to exploring various cabinet styles, configurations, and pricing options across Dallas, laying the groundwork for selections that will define the aesthetic and functionality of this spectacular A-unit.
And what perfectly complements exquisite cabinetry? The answer, unequivocally, is stunning countertops.
Navigating the World of Luxury Countertops: A Fortuitous Discovery in Dallas
The last “slow day” of the holiday season, a brief window where businesses were operational but city traffic remained unusually light, presented a golden opportunity. Seizing this moment, I decided to venture to the stone yards located furthest from my home, meticulously checking their hours the preceding Thursday night. To my absolute astonishment and delight, what appeared before my wondering eyes was an incredible closing down sale at one of Dallas’s most prominent stone yards!

The colossal stone yard in question, IMC, strategically sits at Royal and Zodiac, just east of Harry Hines Boulevard. Unaware of when this monumental sale had commenced or how thoroughly picked over the inventory might be, I made sure to arrive well before 9 AM. My early bird initiative was richly rewarded: the warehouse was overflowing with unparalleled bargains. A staggering twelve slabs found their way into my virtual shopping cart, marking a truly stupendous procurement event. It turned out the sale had been ongoing for nearly a month – a detail their PR team clearly overlooked communicating to Dallas real estate enthusiasts and Daltxrealestate.com readers! While I can only imagine the treasures I might have missed, for anyone currently in the market for premium countertops in Dallas, I urge you to stop reading this moment and get to IMC immediately before these incredible deals vanish entirely.
A Deep Dive into Countertop Materials: More Than Just Aesthetics
For those with a long-standing interest in my renovation chronicles, you might recall – or perhaps even dread – my impending commentary on countertop materials. I say this with a hint of humor because my column from 2015 on this very topic generated an astonishing 107 comments (and counting) from across the nation, with the most recent posted as late as December 3rd. It’s undeniably a subject that resonated deeply, even prompting stone yards and designers to “beg” us to remove the article. The passionate debate highlighted the complexities and emotional investment homeowners place in selecting these critical surfaces.
Choosing the right countertop material involves a delicate balance of aesthetics, durability, maintenance, and cost. While granite, marble, and quartz remain perennial favorites, each comes with its unique characteristics. Granite offers robust durability and a vast array of natural patterns, ideal for busy kitchens. Marble, with its timeless elegance, is celebrated for its luxurious veining but requires careful maintenance due to its porosity. Engineered quartz provides a non-porous, highly durable surface with consistent patterns, making it a low-maintenance champion. Newer materials like porcelain and sintered stone also offer exceptional resistance to heat, scratches, and stains, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in modern design. My previous article delved into the nuanced differences, often challenging conventional wisdom, which explains the spirited discussion it sparked.

So, let’s return to my exhilarating day at IMC.
Curating Luxury: My Stone Selections for the A-Unit Penthouse
My shopping list for the A-unit was meticulously crafted, prioritizing the entry floor medallion, the kitchen countertops, and the master bathroom surfaces. Anything beyond these core requirements was considered a welcome bonus. The entry floor medallion, designed as an impressive 10-foot by 6-foot oval, is intended to perfectly echo a recessed ceiling feature, creating an incredibly elegant and grand entrance statement. The existing stone, however, was a rather uninspired beige Crema Marfil marble – the stone equivalent of “builder’s beige” paint, often chosen for its bland versatility rather than its distinctive appeal.
A Grand Welcome: Onyx Almond for the Entryway

For the entry, I selected the truly “Ooo-la-la” Onyx Almond. Given the impressive scale of the oval medallion, two slabs are necessary. This allows for a captivating semi book-matched look, where the natural patterns of the stone mirror each other, creating a unique central medallion effect within the floor itself. While shown here in a horizontal orientation due to photographic constraints, it will be rotated 90 degrees for installation, so imagine turning your head sideways to fully appreciate its grandeur! Photographs seldom capture the full depth and luminosity of onyx, but trust me, this selection promises a breathtaking “wow” entry, made even sweeter by a 75-percent discount.
Modern Elegance: Princess White Quartzite for the Kitchen

Next on the design agenda is the kitchen. For this penthouse renovation, I’ve embraced a desire for the sleekness and refined aesthetics of a more modern kitchen. My days of Shaker cabinets, though classic, are definitively over. The selected Princess White Quartzite, while impressive in the photograph, possesses a far greater dramatic presence in person. Capturing the true brilliance of shiny stone within a brightly lit warehouse setting is certainly not my forte. Unlike the often higher-contrast Calacatta marbles that dominate current trends, this quartzite offers a more subtle yet sophisticated patination. My design philosophy leans towards the belief that overly busy stone patterns tend to age more quickly than those with refined, understated movement. Think about common HGTV renovations, where designers frequently lament outdated, overly patterned surfaces; this choice aims for enduring elegance.
Striking Contrast: Black Wood for the Master Bathroom

This subsequent selection, known as Black Wood, exudes an exceptional elegance in person. I’ve deliberately zoomed in and heightened the contrast in the image to better convey the distinct wood-like striations that flow horizontally across the slab, which are remarkably evident when viewed directly. This exquisite material is destined for the master bathroom. Before any alarm bells ring, rest assured that the majority of the room will feature classic Carrara marble, including Ann Sacks tile floors and intricate mosaic walls. The Black Wood, primarily used for the vanity tops (his and hers), will serve as a sophisticated, controlled contrast within an otherwise bright and serene space. The inclusion of crisp white sinks will further mitigate any perceived darkness, a concern that, truthfully, does not trouble me given the overall design.
The Ultimate Find: Botanica Stone – A Dream Come True

And just to underscore the magic of this sale, I stumbled upon this absolute beauty. While currently labeled “Botanica,” I’ve previously encountered similar slabs with a slightly greener hue under the name “Esmeralda.” Regardless of its moniker, this stone has always captivated me. Like many covetable items, it was historically beyond my budget – until this extraordinary sale. I managed to acquire their three remaining slabs for less than the cost of a single slab of Esmeralda at its regular price. Considering the extensive stonework required throughout the Penthouse Plunge, the fabricator generously agreed to store these precious slabs until I was ready for them. A truly merry Christmas indeed!
The Art of Fabrication: Partnering with Stonecraft of Dallas
So, who is this invaluable fabricator? It’s none other than Stonecraft of Dallas, owned and expertly managed by Jennifer Voss.
After meticulously touring IMC, comparing countless options, and refining my selections to the absolute best of the best, I reached out to Jennifer. She came highly recommended by the Dallas outpost of Leicht, renowned as Germany’s best-selling high-end cabinet manufacturer. Though she was en route to another job, she graciously agreed to meet me later that day.
I drove home with a collection of photographs showcasing various options for the entry floor medallion. This interim period allowed me to digitally manipulate the slab images on my computer, rotating them and experimenting with different angles to visualize which selections would achieve the most striking effect. Hours later, I returned to IMC for our meeting.
The Value of Expertise: Why a Good Fabricator is Crucial
One of my initial selections for the master bathroom countertops had a price that seemed almost too good to be true. At just $493 for the slab, it was an enticing prospect. However, as Jennifer Voss astutely pointed out, the slab had significant scratching and a fairly considerable crack. This severely limited the amount of usable material. With only a single slab available, there simply wasn’t enough intact stone for the project. This incident perfectly illustrated the invaluable benefit of having a seasoned professional’s “added set of eyes” – someone trained to spot the critical details that excitement or inexperience might blind us to. This expert guidance is an integral part of the service provided by a reputable fabricator.

Jennifer Voss and Stonecraft of Dallas have built a thriving business over six years, expertly fabricating stone for both residential and commercial applications. In the industry, this intricate process is known as “fabrication,” but for most homeowners, it simply refers to the precise art of cutting, shaping, and finishing natural stone to create stunning countertops, floors, and other surfaces. Their expertise ensures that each slab is transformed into a functional work of art, perfectly tailored to the unique specifications of each project.
Smart Renovating: Maximizing Value Through Strategic Sales
Discovering significant sales, like the one at IMC, are truly fantastic opportunities when undertaking a major renovation project. While such savings might not drastically reduce your overall budget – given the inherent complexities and costs of luxury remodels – they provide invaluable flexibility. These unexpected savings allow you to either allocate more funds to other high-impact areas, perhaps upgrading appliances or fixtures, or they serve as a crucial buffer to absorb unforeseen expenses that inevitably arise during any extensive renovation. It’s a strategic win-win, ensuring both quality and financial peace of mind.
