I remember climbing towering woodpiles, imagining myself as a princess in a grand, elevated tower. I’d enthusiastically help customers navigate the yard, guiding them to unique finds, and even answering the phones with a tiny, earnest voice. It felt like I was an integral part of everything.

HH: Our inventory comes from literally everywhere. We acquire many items directly from deconstruction projects where we carefully dismantle structures piece by piece. Beyond that, we have an extensive network of vendors, dedicated homeowners, and contractors who regularly sell or donate fascinating architectural elements and building materials to us. We’re constantly on the move, attending various auctions, exploring quaint small-town markets, and perpetually scouring online platforms such as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Even garage sales can yield unexpected treasures! The truth is, we are always, tirelessly, on the hunt for new inventory, driven by the desire to keep our collection fresh and exciting for our community.

It’s a wonderful creative process to witness.

CD: Throughout your many years at Orr-Reed, what stands out as the craziest or most unexpected thing you’ve ever found?

HH: Oh, I’ve stumbled upon so many truly weird and wonderful things over the years that I could easily fill an entire book with those stories! My oddest discovery this past year was an astonishing homemade phone/calculator/lamp combo unit, which you can see pictured above. It was a true testament to eccentric ingenuity.

However, my absolute favorite find was an old trunk absolutely overflowing with a woman’s cherished high school memorabilia from the 1960s. It was a treasure trove of memories. We embarked on a dedicated quest to find its owner, leveraging the power of Facebook and an outpouring of community help. Miraculously, we succeeded! I was able to personally return the trunk to her. What made it even more special was discovering that she lived just a few miles from me! The trunk had been accidentally left in the attic of her childhood home years ago, completely forgotten. One of my trusted vendors discovered it abandoned on the side of the road and brought it to me. The feeling of reuniting her with her past, with those tangible pieces of her youth and her memories, was incredibly cool and profoundly rewarding.

From Local Legend to Television Spotlight

CD: Orr-Reed Wrecking Company even appeared on the television show Strange Inheritance. How did that come about?

HH: After my father passed away, several articles were written about our company and our family’s unique story. Apparently, our narrative was compelling enough to attract national attention! The team from Strange Inheritance was incredibly persistent; they called us for almost an entire year before I finally agreed. My mom, who is also my business partner, ultimately convinced me, pointing out that it amounted to fantastic, free advertising for Orr-Reed. That experience made me much more open to the idea of television. A few months later, I received a call from a different production company, and we ended up shooting a pilot for a new show over the course of a year. Unfortunately, by the time it was ready to air, there was a major cable network merger. The executive producer who had been championing our pilot at HGTV left the network, and the project lost its internal support. While it was disappointing, I learned a lot. Now, for me to be interested in television again, it would truly have to be the right concept and align perfectly with our mission at Orr-Reed.

CD: What do you truly love most about your job and what you do at Orr-Reed every day?

HH: There are so many things I love. Primarily, I get to work alongside my mom and my friends, and together, we are actively saving pieces of history. I take such immense pride in being able to take my own child to various places around the city and show him the tangible impact of Orr-Reed’s work – things that my family and our company were directly responsible for preserving or installing. It truly feels like there are little pieces of my heart, and our family’s legacy, scattered all over Dallas. Just last year, I took my kiddo to the Dallas Zoo. There, I found a board with my father’s unmistakable handwriting on it, proudly displayed. Not many people have the incredible opportunity to show their child how, even though Granddaddy is gone, his significant mark and lasting contributions still beautifully exist and are visible right here in this vibrant city.
