Discovering Organic Modernism: A Masterpiece at 2215 Kessler Woods Court

Stepping into the world of architectural marvels, one often stumbles upon designs that not only capture the eye but also resonate with a deeper philosophy. Such was the case with the extraordinary Organic Modernist home located at 2215 Kessler Woods Court. This property isn’t just a house; it’s a living sculpture, immediately evoking the timeless genius of architectural legends. Its design instantly brought to mind the iconic harmony of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and the serene elegance of Mountainside House by architect James Fox. The profound influences of these midcentury masters are unmistakably woven into the very fabric of this inspired dwelling, making it a standout example of contemporary design that pays homage to foundational principles.
The Essence of Organic Modernism: A Philosophy of Harmony
My initial encounter with this home prompted an immediate dive into Virginia McAlester’s seminal work, “A Field Guide to American Houses.” My suspicion was confirmed: this remarkable residence, proudly featured as our Inwood Home of the Week, is a quintessential Organic Modernist design. Its adherence to the principles outlined by McAlester is impeccable, as evidenced by this defining passage:
Organic architecture is based on the coalescence of the built environment with nature, allowing the design to respond to the natural environment rather than impose on it. While other modern movements more often championed straight lines and orthogonal designs, Organic modernism favored natural shapes and interesting geometrics. Designs—conceived as reactive both to the environment and to the building material—were developed “organically” into one harmonious unit. Organic architects utilized new technologies and building materials but rejected them as sources of stylistic inspiration, believing they imposed a design from outside sources. An Organic architect would instead carefully study the exact site for a house and then create a design that grew from within, a careful relationship between all of the parts of a house. This might begin with a geometric shape used for the floor plan and then extend into the design of all parts of the house—fixtures, furnishings, and even window shapes.
According to Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s premier Organic architect, form no longer followed function; it was one and the same.
This definition perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the Kessler Woods Court residence. Unlike many modern homes that might appear stark or detached, this property feels intrinsically connected to its surroundings. It’s a testament to a design philosophy where the structure doesn’t just sit on the land but rises from it, a natural extension of the topography itself. Every line, every material, and every spatial arrangement works in concert to create an experience that is both sophisticated and deeply rooted in its context.

The Visionaries Behind the Build: Gonzales-Sangri and Posada
One might easily imagine Frank Lloyd Wright himself admiring, or even claiming, the design of this magnificent structure. Yet, the credit for this Organic Modernist marvel belongs to the incredibly talented Leonardo Gonzales-Sangri. His vision, coupled with the meticulous craftsmanship of builder Frank Posada, brought this architectural dream to life, with its completion in 2018. Their collaboration forged a home that is both a functional living space and a work of art, a true dialogue between concept and execution.
The journey to create such a distinctive home was not without its challenges. “The project took a bit over two years due to the terrain,” explained Hewitt and Habgood listing agent Steve Habgood. “They wanted to take full advantage of the setting, which meant navigating a site with significant topography. A lot of concrete was involved in creating the site, the pool, and the garage, forming the robust foundation required for a home of this caliber. Frank Posada is a man of precision. He wanted everything done exactly right, ensuring that the architectural integrity and structural soundness were paramount.”
Enlisting Gonzales-Sangri was a stroke of genius, precisely because he thrives on such complexities. His approach to design is deeply philosophical. “Truly what drives my work is a deep desire to uncover the hidden solutions that projects and sites inherently have,” Gonzales-Sangri articulated. “When the right partners come together, the end result is a project that feels as though it was always there, effortlessly occupying its place.” This ethos is brilliantly evident in the 4,328-square-foot Organic Modernist home at Kessler Woods Court. It occupies its challenging site not just gracefully, but as if it were an immutable feature of the landscape, destined to be there from the very beginning.

Design Rooted in Nature: Maximizing Experience and Views
The inherent difficulties of the site, particularly its elevation, became an opportunity for innovation rather than a hindrance. “This was in the first phase of the neighborhood, and it has a higher elevation,” Gonzales-Sangri commented. “We are so used to flattening out a site, but we just could not do that here. We had to take advantage of the topography despite it being difficult. More than anything, we wanted to create a home that afforded a great living environment.” This philosophy guided every decision, transforming potential obstacles into unique design features that enhance the home’s connection to its surroundings.
Gonzales-Sangri’s thoughtful approach extended to the homeowner’s experience. “I always take great care as to what people will feel like when they are in the space,” he continued. “I was careful to find ways to maximize the views and the connectivity between indoors and outdoors, and that’s hard to do with zero lot line properties.” Designing a spec home also presents its own set of challenges, as the architect must envision a client who doesn’t yet exist. “It can also be hard to design a spec home because you have no client, so the vision must come from the developer.” Fortunately, for this project, “Frank had a clear vision. We had great conversations about what he wanted, and he gave me a lot of freedom.” This synergy between developer and architect ensured that the initial vision was preserved and enhanced through meticulous design and construction.
Luxurious Features and Seamless Living
The home itself is a testament to luxurious, integrated living. Spanning 4,328 square feet, it offers four generously sized bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and one convenient powder bath. For the discerning connoisseur, a 400-bottle wine cellar is strategically placed next to the ground-level garage, offering both utility and a touch of sophistication. The structural integrity of the home is also forward-thinking, with the roof meticulously designed and built to accommodate the substantial weight of a future rooftop terrace, promising even more spectacular views and entertaining potential.
However, the true showstopper, the element that most profoundly embodies the Organic Modernist ethos, is the series of disappearing sliding glass walls. In the main living area, these expansive glass panels effortlessly retract, blurring the lines between interior comfort and exterior splendor. They open onto a sprawling terrace featuring a zero-edge concrete pool and spa, creating a breathtaking oasis where water meets sky. This seamless transition is not limited to the main living space; these innovative vanishing walls are also incorporated into both the master suite and the guest rooms, ensuring that a connection to the outdoors and an abundance of natural light are integral to nearly every corner of this magnificent home.

An Idyllic Location in Kessler Woods Court
The Kessler Woods Court development, conceived by the insightful Matt Holley, is an exclusive enclave of 25 modern homes, each meticulously designed to complement its environment. Located near the scenic Stevens Park Golf Course and the tranquil Twelve Hills Nature Center, this community offers a unique blend of urban convenience and natural serenity. The developers and HOA have taken great care to ensure that the architectural integrity and harmonious relationship with nature are preserved throughout the neighborhood.
“Each home has to be approved by the HOA’s architectural review committee,” Habgood elaborated, highlighting the community’s commitment to aesthetic coherence and environmental respect. “Every home is designed to take advantage of the views but also to not interfere with the views of your neighbor’s. Window facings, for instance, are strategically placed to maximize individual privacy and shared enjoyment of the natural landscape.” This thoughtful planning creates a living experience that is both private and communal, fostering a sense of belonging within a beautifully designed environment.
A Home for Every Lifestyle
While one might initially envision this Organic Modernist home as an ideal retreat for a trendy young professional couple – and it certainly is – its appeal extends far beyond. A recent open house revealed a diverse range of interest. “Habgood held an open house last weekend and said multiple families with kids came through. They all loved it,” he noted. The presence of Rosemont Elementary School nearby further enhances its attractiveness to families, providing excellent educational opportunities within a short distance. Moreover, the vibrant Bishop Arts District, known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, and acclaimed restaurants, is just a short drive down the street, offering unparalleled cultural and culinary experiences.
