The remarkable journey of Project Transformation began, as the inspiring legend tells us, with a simple sketch on a paper napkin. Visionaries Sarah Wilke and Dr. Leighton K. Farrell reportedly outlined an ambitious idea for an organization that would simultaneously address two critical needs: the vibrant but often underserved urban churches and the essential yet frequently struggling urban schools. This initial concept, born from a desire to bridge gaps and foster community growth, laid the groundwork for what would become a formidable force in youth development and community empowerment. In its inaugural year, Project Transformation launched with 22 dedicated college interns, now proudly known as Corps Members, thanks to the invaluable support received from AmeriCorps. These pioneering individuals served at five distinct urban sites, delivering an enriching summer day camp experience to 250 children from low-income households. This foundational effort not only provided a safe and stimulating environment but also ignited a spark of hope and opportunity for countless young lives.
From those humble yet impactful beginnings, Project Transformation has blossomed into a vital network, significantly expanding its reach and deepening its impact. Today, the organization proudly serves at 10 robust church sites, mobilizing a dedicated force of 113 Corps Members annually. This extensive network collectively reaches approximately 1,100 children each year, providing comprehensive support through both critical after-school programs and engaging summer initiatives. The evolution of Project Transformation reflects a steadfast commitment to addressing the evolving needs of urban communities, ensuring that more children have access to the resources and mentorship necessary for academic success and personal growth.
Just last week, I had the privilege of attending the organization’s annual luncheon, an event that offered a powerful glimpse into the heart of Project Transformation’s mission. The room was abuzz with energy, a vibrant mix of prospective Corps Members eager to embark on their service journey, accomplished past Corps Members sharing their transformative experiences, dedicated staffers ensuring smooth operations, and, most importantly, the bright-eyed children who are the ultimate beneficiaries of these vital programs. Throughout the luncheon, Corps Members eloquently described their daily work, detailing how they provide crucial homework assistance to students after school, transforming often daunting tasks into manageable learning opportunities. Beyond academic support, they emphasized the profound importance of offering a safe, nurturing, and consistent environment where children can thrive, free from the worries and uncertainties that often accompany their home lives. A particularly critical aspect of the program is its focused literacy intervention; students who are behind in reading receive tailored assistance, helping them build fundamental skills that are paramount to future academic and life success. It is no surprise that these dedicated Corps Members are often affectionately referred to as “teachers” by the children they serve, a testament to the deep respect and connection they forge.
Executive Director Alyson Gregory Richter, addressing the assembled group, candidly shared a common challenge: articulating the multifaceted nature of Project Transformation. With a touch of humor, she admitted her “elevator pitch is pretty bad,” underscoring the program’s complexity and the difficulty of capturing its essence in a few brief sentences. Richter acknowledged that many people, upon hearing about the organization, often default to the simple understanding, “Oh, you’re a reading program.” While she readily agreed that the well-established statistics underscore the critical importance of early literacy – specifically, that students reading at grade level by third grade are significantly more likely to remain in school and succeed – she passionately asserted that Project Transformation is profoundly “much more” than just a reading initiative. Her words resonated deeply, highlighting the holistic and comprehensive approach that defines the organization’s unique impact.

Indeed, Alyson Gregory Richter emphasized that Project Transformation encompasses a far broader spectrum of support, acting as a true beacon of comprehensive development for urban youth. “Project Transformation is a reading program and so much more,” she reiterated, elaborating on the diverse elements that contribute to its profound impact. The program ensures that children receive healthy meals and snacks, addressing a fundamental need that directly impacts their ability to learn and thrive. It provides “incredible college role models,” young adults who inspire, guide, and demonstrate the possibilities of higher education, acting as living proof of aspiration and achievement. Through these interactions, children experience the powerful sensation of a “community rallying around them,” fostering a deep sense of belonging and support that is often lacking in their daily lives. Richter further explained that within this inclusive and nurturing environment, children learn vital social-emotional skills, including kindness, empathy, and respect. They are encouraged to learn and have fun in an atmosphere that actively fosters confidence, promotes acceptance of themselves and others, and celebrates individual uniqueness. This holistic approach ensures that children are not just academically supported, but also emotionally fortified and socially enriched, equipping them with the tools they need to navigate challenges and embrace opportunities.
The impact of Project Transformation extends equally to its dedicated Corps Members. While they receive valuable stipends and a voucher toward their college education – tangible benefits that help alleviate the financial burdens of higher learning – Richter asserted that they often gain even more profound and lasting benefits from their tenure with the program. The immersive experiences Corps Members have during their service frequently serve as pivotal moments, altering the trajectory of their career plans or, conversely, solidifying an existing desire to enter professions rooted in service, such as ministry or teaching. Many discover a deep-seated passion for social justice, education, or community development that they might not have otherwise recognized. The program provides hands-on leadership experience, cultivates a deep understanding of societal challenges, and hones essential skills like empathy, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication. It is not merely a summer job or an internship; it is a foundational experience that shapes personal values, professional aspirations, and a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
This transformative effect on Corps Members was powerfully echoed by Blair Thompson, who now serves as the Executive Associate Minister at First United Methodist Church in Dallas. Reflecting on her own time as a Corps Member in Oklahoma, Thompson shared that the experience transcended being merely “another way to pay for college.” Instead, it became a catalyst for a profound shift in her perspective, challenging her preconceptions about the low-income neighborhood she served. Her service awakened a deeper understanding and empathy, leading her to proclaim, “I began to see them as us.” This powerful realization extended beyond individuals, transforming her perception of the community: “That failing school was our school. That neighborhood was us.” Thompson’s testimony highlights Project Transformation’s unique ability to bridge divides, foster mutual understanding, and cultivate a sense of collective ownership and responsibility within diverse communities. Similarly, Blake Danner, another proud Project Transformation alum, wholeheartedly agreed with this sentiment, succinctly stating, “It was so much more than a summer job.” His words encapsulate the profound sense of purpose, growth, and meaningful engagement that defines the Corps Member experience, far surpassing the typical expectations of seasonal employment.
However, it was the voice of little Angel, a student from the Christ’s Foundry site, that truly moved everyone present to tears. With an innocence and honesty that cut straight to the heart, he simply explained the immense impact of the Project Transformation “teachers,” stating with profound conviction, “They take care of us, and they are everything to us.” Angel’s simple yet powerful words encapsulated the very essence of Project Transformation’s mission: providing unwavering care, support, and a sense of belonging that profoundly shapes the lives of the children it serves. His testimony serves as a poignant reminder that at its core, this program is about building meaningful relationships, fostering trust, and ensuring that every child feels valued, protected, and empowered to reach their full potential. It’s a testament to the human connection that transforms lives and strengthens communities, one child at a time.
Project Transformation continues to seek passionate individuals dedicated to making a tangible difference in the lives of urban youth. Applications are currently being accepted for summer camp Corps Members, offering a unique opportunity for college students to gain invaluable leadership experience, earn stipends, and receive education vouchers, all while contributing to a cause that truly matters. If you are inspired by the transformative work of Project Transformation and wish to contribute to its ongoing success, there are various ways to help. Donation levels are structured to make a meaningful impact at every contribution point. For instance, a donation of $25 can provide a week of healthy snacks for several children, ensuring they have the energy to learn and play. $100 can supply a classroom with engaging new books, fostering a love for reading. Stepping up to $500 can support a Corps Member’s monthly stipend, enabling a dedicated college student to serve and mentor children without financial strain. For those able to give more, a $1,500 donation can provide essential materials and comprehensive support for an entire site for a month, directly impacting hundreds of children. Every contribution, regardless of size, is a direct investment in the future of urban youth, helping to build a brighter, more equitable future for all. Your support empowers Project Transformation to continue its vital work of nurturing young minds, fostering community connections, and transforming lives.
