For those who have experienced the unique charm and architectural legacy of Dallas, certain homes resonate with an almost immediate recognition. Among these iconic residences stands the magnificent Preston Hollow estate designed by the legendary Bud Oglesby. This isn’t just a house; it’s a landmark, a testament to modernist principles, and a rare opportunity to own a piece of Dallas architectural history.

Bud Oglesby remains one of Dallas’s most celebrated and influential architects. While his distinctive townhomes occasionally appear on the market, the chance to acquire one of his grander estates, like this exceptional property, is an infrequent and highly coveted event. Oglesby’s designs are renowned for their timeless elegance, their profound connection to nature, and an unparalleled mastery of natural light – elements that define luxury living in Dallas.

Our editor, Shelby Skrhak, beautifully encapsulated Oglesby’s genius in her dedicated post, articulating that “Dallas Modernist architect Bud Oglesby knew how to do light right.” This profound understanding of integrating natural light into living spaces is perhaps nowhere more exquisitely showcased than in this expansive 7,850-square-foot luxury residence. Boasting five generously appointed bedrooms and six sophisticated bathrooms, this 1.31-acre Preston Hollow estate is a masterclass in design.

The architectural brilliance is immediately evident in its distinctive U-shaped configuration. This thoughtful layout is more than just a design choice; it’s a deliberate embrace, much like arms reaching out to envelop the spectacular central courtyard and its inviting pool. This unique shape not only maximizes privacy and creates a secluded oasis but also ensures that every significant room on the ground floor is bathed in natural light and offers captivating views of the lush gardens and sparkling water feature. It’s a harmonious blend of indoor comfort and outdoor serenity, a signature of Oglesby’s modernist vision.

In a rare and gracious gesture, the current owner, Jodi Shelton, took the time to answer our most pressing questions, providing an intimate and authentic perspective on living within this iconic Bud Oglesby masterpiece. Her insights offer an unparalleled glimpse into the heart and soul of this remarkable Preston Hollow estate, revealing what makes it truly special beyond its architectural pedigree.

Discovering a Dream: What Inspired the Purchase of This Iconic Home?

Jodi Shelton: From the very first moment I stepped onto this property, I knew instinctively that this was where I wanted to create our family home. The distinctive U-shaped configuration of this mid-century modern gem immediately captivated me. It’s an architectural marvel that intelligently channels natural light and offers stunning, expansive views of the pools and meticulously landscaped gardens from nearly every vantage point downstairs. When I initially toured the house, the entrance was quite understated and traditional, offering no hint of the grandeur within. However, once you crossed the threshold, it was an absolutely breathtaking reveal – an aesthetically beautiful surprise where the boundaries between the serene outdoors and the elegant interior seemed to dissolve effortlessly. Even after years of living here, that initial sense of wonder, that feeling of being completely swept away by its beauty, still takes my breath away every single day.

A Sanctuary Within: Unveiling the Homeowner’s Favorite Space

Jodi Shelton: Like countless others, I’ve spent the past few years working remotely from home. I strategically moved my desk into my bedroom, transforming it into the most incredible personal office space. Waking up each morning, my routine begins with drawing back all the curtains, inviting a cascade of glorious natural light to flood the room. Then, I fling open the doors, welcoming the crisp, fresh air and the soothing, melodic sound of the waterfall from the courtyard. It’s an immediate immersion into nature, creating an environment that feels both energizing and profoundly peaceful, the perfect setting to begin my workday. I genuinely believe I possess the best office in the world! Whether I’m deep in work, enjoying a leisurely morning coffee, or simply lounging in bed, starting the day in this bedroom is an unparalleled and truly wonderful experience. It’s a sanctuary that invigorates the spirit and calms the mind, making every day feel like a fresh start.

Thoughtful Evolution: Enhancing an Architectural Masterpiece

Jodi Shelton: Yes, we undertook several thoughtful updates to the house, but our guiding principle was always to honor and preserve the inherent spirit and exquisite design of Bud Oglesby’s original architecture. We believed strongly that our role was to enhance what Oglesby created, with the assistance of our own talented architect, who masterfully balanced modern functionality with historical integrity.

One of our most significant updates was redesigning the front entrance. We recognized that while the home was beautiful, the entrance didn’t quite deliver the ‘wow factor’ such a distinguished property deserved. Our new glass-fronted entrance now provides a more dramatic and welcoming approach. Crucially, despite its contemporary transparency, it’s designed to offer only a tantalizing glimpse into the home, perfectly retaining the essential elements of privacy and that delightful ‘surprise factor’ upon entry, which was always a hallmark of Oglesby’s brilliance.

Additionally, we reconfigured the kitchen. Originally, it was more enclosed and somewhat separated from the main living areas. By opening up the space, we not only modernized its functionality but also created a more fluid and symmetrical connection to the rest of the home’s flow. It’s a testament to the seamless integration of this renovation that many visitors genuinely believe this open-plan kitchen was part of Oglesby’s original design. Finally, we undertook a tasteful modernization of the primary bathroom. In doing so, we carefully retained much of the original cabinetry, which remains both beautifully crafted and highly utilitarian, perfectly blending contemporary luxury with the enduring appeal of its mid-century heritage.

The Bittersweet Farewell: What Will Be Missed Most?

Jodi Shelton: Honestly, I will miss absolutely everything about this home! Over the past 22 years, I’ve resided in six different homes across prestigious Dallas neighborhoods like Highland Park and Preston Hollow. With every previous move, I never harbored a single second thought about transitioning to the next chapter. This time, however, it’s profoundly different. My connection to this Bud Oglesby estate runs deep, and leaving it will undoubtedly be a difficult process. I genuinely adore the originality, the unique character, and the palpable sense of peace this home exudes. It offers such an incredible refuge; I truly feel lighter and undeniably happier from the moment I walk through the door. It has served as the ideal setting for nurturing our family life and has simultaneously proven to be the absolute perfect home for entertaining guests, from intimate gatherings to large celebrations. We watched our teenage boys grow up within these walls, celebrating their milestones and eventually seeing them off to university. It truly will be hard to say goodbye, but I hold a strong belief that another family will fall in love with this extraordinary home and cherish it every bit as much as we have.

Cherished Chapters: A Favorite Memory Forged in This Home

Jodi Shelton: This house has been much more than just a structure; it’s been the very heart of our family life, and the memories we’ve created here together are truly countless. A particularly vivid and cherished memory stems from the period during COVID. I had all three of my children at home with me, and while I’m certain there were unique challenges for them in some respects, we truly made the most of our extended time together. We filled our long days with shared experiences – binge-watching beloved series, experimenting with new recipes and savoring meals together, luxuriating by the tranquil pool, diving into books, and collaborating on various projects. Looking back, I honestly cannot imagine anywhere else I would have rather spent those challenging yet ultimately bonding days of COVID than within the comforting embrace of this very home, surrounded by my loved ones.

The Art of Hosting: An Unforgettable Party House

Jodi Shelton: Absolutely, this house has been the backdrop for countless incredible parties and cherished celebrations! We hosted many memorable events, including my son’s joyous 16th birthday party and his graduation celebration, all perfectly accommodated by the home’s expansive and flowing spaces. For five consecutive years, I had the privilege of hosting an annual chef’s dinner here, a truly special event dedicated to raising vital funds for nine schools in Haiti. These schools were built through the incredible efforts of my children and their classmates from the Dallas International School, in partnership with BuildON.

These dinners were imbued with a profound purpose and were also immensely fun and creatively inspiring. Each donor generously sponsored a table, taking full responsibility for its unique decoration, providing exquisite wine pairings, elegant place settings, and conceptualizing a captivating theme. One of the most unforgettable tables even featured live fish as its centerpiece – a truly extraordinary sight! These were grand affairs, accommodating 125 seated guests for an elaborate five-course dinner. The culinary magic was orchestrated by a rotating selection of Dallas’s finest restaurants and most celebrated chefs, including Fabien Goury and Yasmine Bohsali Goury from Main Street Bakery, Georgie, Stephan Courseau from Le Bilboquet, and the renowned Chef John Tesar. Their incredible generosity meant they contributed their talents entirely pro bono, ensuring that all funds raised went directly to support our impactful Haiti project.

What made these evenings even more special was that the entire dinner service – from the meticulous setup and elegant serving to the comprehensive cleanup – was handled with remarkable professionalism by the dedicated students of the Dallas International School. These events typically took place in early April, a perfect time of year when the wisteria was in full, fragrant bloom, and the Dallas weather was simply ideal. We would throw open the doors, letting the gentle breezes and the sounds of carefully curated music fill the air, creating an atmosphere of sophisticated conviviality that flowed seamlessly between the indoor and outdoor spaces. It is, without a doubt, the quintessential party house, designed for both grand celebrations and meaningful gatherings.
