Designing Your Dream Outdoor Oasis: Navigating Material Choices for a Backyard Pool and Living Space
Embarking on a large-scale home improvement project, particularly one involving the creation of an expansive outdoor living area, often brings with it a unique set of challenges. This is our second major pool construction, and even with the experience of the first, I firmly believe that the most formidable hurdle in the entire process remains the meticulous selection of materials. While my husband, Todd, and I typically share a cohesive design aesthetic after 16 years together, few decisions spark more impassioned debate than pinpointing the exact finishes that will define our outdoor sanctuary.
The inherent difficulty lies in the monumental commitment required based on such limited information. Imagine trying to visualize hundreds of square feet of a particular stacked stone veneer climbing a retaining wall, or a vast expanse of stained concrete underfoot, when all you have before you are tiny samples and color chips. These small swatches offer only a glimpse, rarely conveying the true texture, color variation, and overall impact of the material when applied on a grand scale. The interplay of natural light, surrounding landscape, and even the time of day can dramatically alter a material’s appearance, making the selection process an exercise in hopeful projection.
Beyond aesthetics, the material selection phase is where the financial implications of a project truly crystallize. Every choice directly impacts the budget, forcing a constant weighing of cost against value. Do we allocate a larger portion of our funds to that exquisite custom tile for the pool interior, or is a super-efficient, whisper-quiet pool pump a more pragmatic investment for long-term enjoyment and operational savings? The desire for an oversized outdoor fireplace with an impressive stone mantel might mean deferring the dream of an elaborate outdoor kitchen. These are not merely design preferences but strategic decisions that ultimately shape the functionality, long-term enjoyment, and perhaps most crucially, the added value to our home.
Establishing the Vision: Blending New with Existing Architecture

Despite the inherent challenges in material selection, Todd and I found complete alignment on the overarching design direction. Our primary goal was to create an outdoor living space that would harmoniously reflect and respect the existing architectural style of our home. We weren’t aiming for a historically accurate mimicry, nor did we feel the need to deceive anyone into thinking the pool had “always been there.” Instead, the objective was to imbue the new outdoor elements with the same design “spirit” that defines our classic, traditional-style house. This meant a traditional pool design, emphasizing timeless appeal rather than fleeting trends.
Beyond aesthetic continuity, the driving force behind this project was a desire to significantly expand our outdoor living capabilities. We yearned for a versatile space where we could host gatherings, enjoy family time, and simply unwind with friends. This vision shaped every decision, from the layout of the pool to the configuration of the adjacent lounging areas. To achieve this, we knew the aesthetic needed to be fairly neutral and as “soft” as possible. With imposing six-foot retaining walls delineating two sides of the property, there was a genuine risk of the backyard feeling cavernous or overly stark—a “polar bear exhibit,” as we lightheartedly termed it. The solution was to choose materials that would provide a serene, understated backdrop, allowing us the flexibility to inject vibrant personality through ever-changing assortments of colorful outdoor furniture, throw pillows, and potted plants. This approach ensures the space remains dynamic and fresh season after season, without being anchored to a singular, potentially dated, look.
Strategic Material Choices: Stone, Cap, and Greenery
Our commitment to creating a soft, inviting, and enduring outdoor environment guided our specific material selections. For the prominent retaining walls, we ultimately decided on a very light, natural stacked stone veneer. This choice offered the desired texture and visual interest while maintaining a neutral palette that wouldn’t overpower the landscape. Complementing the stone veneer, we selected cast stone for the wall caps. Cast stone provides a refined, finished look that mimics natural cut stone but often offers greater consistency and a more controlled aesthetic. This combination delivers both structural integrity and sophisticated visual appeal.
To actively counteract the inherent hardness of these substantial stone structures, a thoughtful landscaping strategy was essential. We incorporated trenches at the base of the retaining walls, specifically designed for planting creeping fig ivy. This particular plant holds a special significance for us, as it already thrives in various locations on our property, demonstrating its resilience and suitability for our local climate. Moreover, its lush, climbing habit and ability to soften rigid surfaces were precisely what we needed. The creeping fig ivy will gradually ascend the walls, transforming the hardscape into a living, green tapestry. This not only enhances the visual softness of the space but also evokes nostalgic memories of Charleston, one of our favorite cities, renowned for its charming, ivy-clad architecture. This conscious integration of natural elements helps bridge the gap between built structures and the surrounding garden, creating a truly harmonious outdoor environment.

Designing the Perfect Pool: Functionality Meets Family Fun
When it came to designing the pool itself, we undertook a thorough retrospective analysis, drawing lessons from our previous pool, observing how our friends utilized theirs, and critically assessing our anticipated needs now that we have children. The overriding conclusion was quite clear: our kids would find joy splashing in virtually anything we built. However, for the adults, the core desire was a comfortable spot to relax, perhaps with a glass of wine, to cool off on a warm day. The key was to design a space that could seamlessly accommodate both vibrant child’s play and serene adult relaxation, ensuring ample separation to allow the kids to be as loud and splashy as they wished on one end, while the grownups could enjoy a more tranquil experience at the other.
This functional requirement led us to a thoughtful and ultimately successful design. We opted for a classic rectangular shape, a timeless choice that offers both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. Its relatively shallow depth, reaching only five feet at its deepest point, was a deliberate decision. This depth is ideal for families with children, enhancing safety and allowing for a wider range of activities, from wading to casual swimming. To further enhance usability and comfort, we incorporated a generously sized sun/splash deck. This area provides a perfect shallow zone for toddlers to play, for adults to lounge partially submerged, or for setting up sun chairs within the water itself. Complementing this, a submerged bench runs the entire length of one side of the pool. This feature is an absolute game-changer, offering an inviting spot for adults to sit and converse, or for kids to take a break without having to exit the water entirely. These combined features transform the pool from a mere swimming hole into a multi-functional aquatic lounge, catering to every member of the family and their friends.
Crafting the Outdoor Living Room: The Hearth of the Home
Adjacent to the pool, the outdoor living area was conceived with an emphasis on simplicity, comfort, and a strong focal point. Our design revolves around a magnificent, oversized outdoor fireplace, strategically centered opposite our library door. This placement not only creates a visually commanding presence but also serves as a natural extension of our indoor living spaces, blurring the lines between interior and exterior. The fireplace is not merely decorative; it’s designed for robust functionality and enjoyment. It features a substantial hearth, providing ample seating where children can gather to warm up after an evening swim on a chilly night, fostering cozy family moments. Above, a wide mantel offers a perfect display area for decorative plants, cherished outdoor objects, and seasonal adornments, further personalizing the space and enhancing its inviting ambiance. This outdoor fireplace transforms the area into a year-round destination, extending the usability of our backyard well beyond the swimming season, offering warmth and glow for cooler evenings and creating a natural gathering spot for conversation and relaxation.
The Grand Anticipation: From Mudpit to Masterpiece
Now, the waiting game begins, as we eagerly anticipate the dramatic transformation of what was once affectionately (or perhaps not so affectionately) known as our backyard mudpit. Witnessing its evolution into an amazing outdoor oasis, nestled beneath the majestic, towering canopy of Kessler Park, fills us with immense excitement. The completion of this ambitious project truly cannot come soon enough. The vision of future gatherings, laughter, and serene moments in this newly crafted haven keeps our spirits high. We are already well-prepared for the finishing touches, with a garage bay brimming with carefully selected outdoor furniture – a wonderful wedding gift from my thoughtful in-laws. We also have an outdoor rug, a fantastic find from one of my PR firm’s esteemed home decor clients, along with an eclectic assortment of colorful outdoor pillows and oversized pots just waiting to be filled with vibrant greenery. Every element has been chosen with care, reflecting our desire to create a space that is both beautiful and deeply personal. The final stages of decorating promise to be a joyous culmination of months of planning and anticipation. We anticipate this grand unveiling within the next six to eight weeks, and we can hardly wait to officially “let the decorating begin” and fully immerse ourselves in our new backyard sanctuary.
