In 2015, after thirteen fulfilling years residing in his truly exceptional Midcentury Modern home, Michael Russell decided it was time for a change of scenery. His decision marked the end of an era in a home that was not just a place to live, but a testament to classic design and personal craftsmanship.
The allure of that particular Midcentury Modern property was so profound that it recently re-entered the market and swiftly sold again, reaffirming its timeless appeal. We had the pleasure of featuring it previously, specifically highlighting its impressive, expansive backyard deck. What many might not realize is that this magnificent outdoor living space, a true centerpiece for entertaining and relaxation, was entirely conceptualized and constructed by Russell himself. His hands-on approach and keen eye for design were evident in every detail, making the property even more desirable.

Given its undeniable charm, it comes as no surprise that his former Midcentury Modern residence was snapped up almost instantly in its most recent listing. Reflecting on his own selling experience back in 2015, Russell recounted how the property was listed on a Thursday and had multiple offers, selling above asking price by the weekend. Such is the enduring appeal of a home crafted with passion and individuality.

Following the sale of his cherished MCM home in 2015, Russell decided to step back from homeownership for a brief period, opting for a rental in the vibrant Uptown area of Dallas. However, the allure of creating a truly personal living space proved too strong to resist, and his time as a renter was short-lived. Soon, he embarked on a new quest: to find another extraordinary place to call home. Russell describes his architectural taste not as adherence to a specific style, but rather an appreciation for anything genuinely unique and distinctive. This philosophy perfectly encapsulates his deep affection for his current residence, a home that truly defies convention.

Discovering the Geodesic Dome: A Unique Architectural Gem
Michael’s latest acquisition is nothing short of extraordinary: a geodesic dome home. This architectural marvel, characterized by its spherical or partial-spherical structure composed of a network of triangles, immediately captured his imagination. When he first encountered the property, it had recently undergone a renovation by a team of flippers. Russell recalls that their remodeling choices, while fresh, were decidedly “interesting,” hinting at a design aesthetic that left room for personal refinement and improvement.
At the time of his initial visit, the dome home had lingered on the market, seemingly awaiting the right visionary owner. Unsure if his appreciation for its unconventional design was shared, Russell sought the opinions of his closest friends, bringing them by for multiple viewings. He questioned if his inclination towards such a unique property was a sign of eccentricity or genius. Was this truly a “cool house,” as he perceived it? One friend, struck by its distinctive silhouette and cozy, inviting ambiance, affectionately dubbed it the “Hobbit House.” The name resonated deeply with Russell and, as these things often do, it stuck, becoming an endearing moniker for his unusual abode.

Encouraged by his friends’ reactions and his own growing affinity for the property, Russell decided to make an offer. To his delight, it was accepted. The “Hobbit House,” this whimsical and architecturally significant geodesic dome, was officially his.
His connection to dome architecture wasn’t entirely new. Growing up in Arkansas, he fondly remembered a very similar geodesic dome house just a few streets from his childhood home. Perhaps it was this nostalgic link that subtly drew him to the property. Or perhaps it was the undeniable charm of being back in East Dallas, a vibrant community known for its diverse housing stock and artistic spirit. Then again, the presence of an incredible, sprawling greenbelt directly behind the property, offering a serene escape into nature, was an undeniable draw. Whatever the precise combination of factors, Russell knew this was where he was meant to be, and he eagerly moved into his new, unconventional dwelling.
Initially, Russell harbored a five-year plan for his new home. He envisioned it as a captivating conversation starter, a unique residence he could enjoy for a reasonable price before eventually moving on to what he perceived as his “dream home.” He saw it as an interim chapter, a quirky stop on his property journey.

However, as the years passed, that temporary plan began to shift. What started as a five-year stint evolved into a deep-seated attachment. Today, Russell candidly admits that he genuinely cannot imagine moving. Especially in the current competitive real estate market, the unique appeal of his geodesic dome home consistently attracts attention, with agents and potential buyers frequently approaching him. Yet, the thought of leaving his distinctive sanctuary has become increasingly distant.

As we conversed, Michael paused, his gaze drifting out from his home office window towards his expansive backyard. There, the vibrant greenbelt unfolded, a tapestry of mature trees and untamed nature. He declared with conviction that this view alone, a constant source of tranquility and inspiration, is more than enough reason to stay put. He affectionately refers to his backyard as “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom,” a playful nod to the diverse array of wildlife that frequents his property. Owls perch in the tall branches, opossums scurry through the undergrowth, and on one memorable occasion, he even spotted a coyote. The very next day, a fence contractor was summoned to install an additional seven feet of fencing, a practical measure to coexist peacefully with his wild neighbors.

Beyond the captivating exterior and the natural splendor of his surroundings, Russell has dedicated considerable effort to the interior of his geodesic dome. He has meticulously addressed what he describes as “previous shortcuts” taken during the initial flip, transforming the space with his own distinct touches. The downstairs area boasts a generously open layout, making the house an ideal venue for hosting gatherings and entertaining guests, a passion he frequently indulged in before societal norms temporarily shifted.
Another aspect he absolutely cherishes about his dome home is its inherent element of surprise. The exterior, while distinctive, doesn’t immediately reveal the architectural marvel within. Russell recounted instances where long-term neighbors, living on the same street for years, would visit for the first time and express utter astonishment upon discovering it’s a two-story home. This unexpected verticality, cleverly integrated within the dome’s unique shell, consistently delights and impresses visitors, underscoring the truly one-of-a-kind nature of his beloved “Hobbit House.” His journey with this geodesic dome is a testament to the fact that home isn’t just about shelter; it’s about finding a space that truly reflects who you are, a place where individuality and design intertwine to create something truly special.
