John Backes embodies the dynamic spirit of Dallas as a pioneering real estate entrepreneur, technology innovator, and an unwavering champion for the city’s growth. With an infectious blend of raw enthusiasm and genuine sincerity, Backes radiates energy, constantly generating fresh ideas that are reshaping the landscape of real estate technology, often referred to as PropTech, within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and beyond.

A proud graduate of St. Mark’s, Backes is driven by a profound passion for injecting innovative concepts into the established real estate community. He achieves this by actively collaborating with Dallas’s vibrant and ever-expanding startup ecosystem. This compelling motivation manifests in numerous groundbreaking initiatives and roles, firmly establishing him as a central figure in Dallas’s innovation scene.

MOTIVE Accelerator Program: Cultivating PropTech Startups

Among his most ambitious endeavors is the launch of the MOTIVE Accelerator Program, set to debut this fall. This eagerly anticipated program is meticulously designed to provide crucial funding to select commercial real estate technology startups. Beyond financial support, MOTIVE offers invaluable mentorship through a structured curriculum focused on critical areas such as customer discovery, product development, and market validation. Backes envisions MOTIVE as a powerful catalyst, fostering the next generation of PropTech solutions and solidifying Dallas’s reputation as a global hub for real estate innovation.

RealTech Dallas: Bridging Real Estate and Technology

Backes’ commitment to fostering collaboration is further evidenced by his role as co-founder of RealTech Dallas, an initiative he launched just over a year ago. RealTech Dallas serves as a vital nexus, strategically bringing together the burgeoning startup community with the established real estate industry. Its mission is to create a dynamic forum where new ideas, technological advancements, and business opportunities can freely converge, addressing long-standing inefficiencies and inspiring novel approaches within commercial real estate.

His entrepreneurial portfolio also includes DXZ Media, a full-service branding and digital marketing agency. DXZ Media specializes in solving intricate challenges related to technology integration, brand identity development, and strategic market positioning for a diverse clientele. This venture underscores Backes’ holistic understanding of modern business needs, extending beyond direct PropTech solutions to the essential supporting infrastructure.

One might assume such a demanding schedule would leave little room for other commitments, but for Backes, it’s merely the beginning. He dedicates his time as a mentor at The Dallas Entrepreneur Center (DEC), a cornerstone of the city’s startup ecosystem, guiding aspiring entrepreneurs. Additionally, he serves as an advisor at PoshPublic, an innovative curated crowdfunding platform designed to empower artists and non-profit organizations by allowing them to launch campaigns without upfront costs or financial risk. This multifaceted engagement highlights Backes’ deep-seated commitment to cultivating a thriving entrepreneurial landscape across various sectors in Dallas.

Dallas: A Dynamic Center of Change

Backes articulates his vision with remarkable clarity, reflecting on the unique confluence of factors in Dallas. “We have an incredible story here in Dallas of innovative real estate companies, alongside so many tech startups. There was so much vibrancy, but critically, no intersection,” Backes observed. “Every day, I feel like I’m in a very dynamic center of change, helping to create those essential connections.” This sentiment encapsulates his driving philosophy: to intentionally forge the links that unlock Dallas’s immense potential.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, John Backes honed his professional acumen during a successful tenure in Chicago with a prominent multifamily sales and development real estate firm. However, the allure of his hometown eventually drew him back to Dallas in 2009. The city he returned to was vastly different from the one he had left behind during his youth.

A City Transformed and a New Urban Perspective

“When I was growing up, Dallas felt somewhat provincial, and you simply didn’t venture south of Fitzhugh,” he recalled, emphasizing the dramatic transformation the city had undergone. “I honestly never expected to move back to Dallas.” Yet, the burgeoning energy and evolving urban landscape captivated him. In 2013, Backes, his wife Amber, and their two young daughters made a deliberate choice to embrace a more urban lifestyle, selling their suburban home and renting an apartment at the vibrant intersection of Gaston and Good Latimer.

This personal decision deeply informed his professional perspective. “It’s a little wild, but urban environments are wild places, and that’s precisely part of their appeal—there’s an ordered chaos,” Backes explained. “In a short span, I’ve been able to expose my children to remarkable institutions like the Perot Museum, the Dallas Arts District, Klyde Warren Park, and the Dallas Arboretum, among many others.” This immersion in city life provided his family with a richness of cultural and educational experiences that suburban living simply couldn’t offer.

The primary catalyst for this urban migration was the irresistible allure of genuine, spontaneous urban interactions. “Throughout my entire life, I’ve been fascinated by the concept of being in a place where you inevitably collide with people,” he elaborated. “In that North Dallas area, the environment just isn’t designed for such encounters. I cherish the chance to run into somebody unexpectedly. That’s a unique benefit of urban environments and a key component of the beauty found in density within any city – when people can meet each other on foot, it creates a profoundly different dynamic than relying on a car for every interaction.” This philosophy of “collision” and serendipitous connection now underpins much of his work in bringing disparate sectors together.

Angel Investing and the Rise of Dallas Startups

Professionally, Backes remained actively engaged, particularly during the challenging period of the financial crisis when capital was scarce. He focused on angel investing outside the traditional real estate sector, gaining invaluable experience in identifying and nurturing early-stage ventures. “After that period, I was hungry to continue to be in that world,” he stated, referring to the exciting realm of startups and innovation.

His return to Dallas coincided with the nascent stages of the city’s startup community, which was just beginning to gather momentum. “The Dallas startup community was really just getting going about a year before, with groups like Tech Wildcatters and Launch DFW starting to host happy hours and informal gatherings,” he recounted. This emergent energy resonated deeply with Backes’ own entrepreneurial drive, setting the stage for his subsequent groundbreaking initiatives.

RealFolio: Connecting Commercial Real Estate Professionals

Inspired by this burgeoning ecosystem and recognizing a significant void in the commercial real estate industry, Backes channeled his energy into launching RealFolio. This innovative website was designed to empower commercial real estate professionals to discover and connect with each other based on their past project involvement and expertise. “I was incredibly frustrated by how difficult it was to pinpoint who had been involved with a particular real estate project in the past – whether it was the original developer, the leasing representatives, the interior architects, or the engineers. Who were these crucial people?” he explained. RealFolio provided the elegant solution, creating a transparent and easily searchable database that transformed professional networking within the industry.

RealTech Dallas: The Intersection of Innovation

Concurrent with RealFolio’s development, RealTech Dallas began gaining significant traction. These interwoven initiatives and the growing network of passionate individuals effectively forged a vibrant intersection between commercial real estate and technology, allowing RealTech Dallas to flourish rapidly. “The very first RealTech Dallas event a year ago attracted around 50 attendees,” Backes shared, illustrating its humble beginnings. “The second event saw that number swell to 200, and the third event drew an impressive 240 people. These weren’t just curious onlookers; attendees hailed from major players like JLL, CBRE, Neiman Marcus, encompassing corporate real estate divisions, innovation and technology specialists, developers, startups, CEOs, and founders.”

This success prompted RealTech Dallas to evolve, integrating its efforts more consistently with broader community initiatives like Dallas Startup Week. This free, five-day celebration of Dallas’s entrepreneurial spirit became a perfect platform. At its most recent event in March, RealTech Dallas curated an entire track dedicated specifically to real estate technology. Backes proudly highlighted a particularly innovative outcome: “The winner of one of our challenges developed an ingenious idea for establishing credit scores for commercial leases, directly addressing the crucial question, ‘How do you accurately assess the value of a lease if it’s not tied to an institutional tenant?'” This demonstrates the tangible, problem-solving impact of RealTech Dallas.

Dallas: The Global Epicenter for PropTech Innovation

Looking ahead, Backes’ focus remains firmly fixed on the transformative potential of the MOTIVE Accelerator Program, confident in Dallas’s unique positioning. “Dallas is unequivocally the best place in the world to innovate at the critical intersection of real estate and technology,” Backes declared with conviction. He substantiates this bold claim with compelling evidence:

  • Two of the top five real estate CRMs globally are headquartered in Dallas.
  • RealPage, a leading provider of software and data analytics to the real estate industry, maintains a significant presence here.
  • CBRE Innovation Lab, a hub for cutting-edge PropTech research and development, is actively operating within the city.
  • JLL’s (Jones Lang LaSalle) influential tech group is also based in Dallas, driving technological advancements for one of the world’s largest real estate services firms.
  • Trammell Crow, an iconic name in commercial real estate development, calls Dallas home.
  • Furthermore, dozens of innovative PropTech startups are thriving, contributing to a vibrant and competitive ecosystem.

Backes passionately asserts, “Dallas real estate tech is truly one of the great untold stories of our city.” Through his tireless efforts, unwavering vision, and a remarkable ability to connect people and ideas, John Backes is not just telling this story; he is actively writing its most compelling chapters, cementing Dallas’s reputation as a global leader in real estate technology and innovation.
