From the moment a coveted Barbie Dream House sparked my imagination at eight years old, I’ve been immersed in the vibrant world of design. Over decades, I’ve journeyed through every intricate corner of the Dallas design scene, cultivating a keen eye for truly exceptional resources. Among the myriad options, one stands out with unparalleled distinction and a heartwarming legacy: the Childress family and their extraordinary enterprise. Their story is not just one of business acumen, but a testament to dedication, resilience, and a profound commitment to craftsmanship that has shaped the aesthetic landscape of Dallas for generations.

When you seek inspiration for Dallas home decor or embark on a significant interior design project, the name Childress invariably surfaces. Many immediately recognize Childress as the ultimate destination for premium fabrics, and indeed, their selection is second to none. However, to view them solely through the lens of a fabric store would be to overlook the expansive breadth of their expertise. Throughout my career, both for my personal projects and for countless clients, Childress has been an indispensable partner. They’ve brought visions to life by crafting exquisite custom draperies that elevate any space, designing bespoke pillows that add a touch of luxury, and producing magnificent bedding ensembles that transform bedrooms into sanctuaries. Beyond textiles, their mastery extends to furniture creation, where they meticulously build custom sofas, chairs, and headboards, tailored to precise specifications and unparalleled comfort. Frankly, I often ponder what the Dallas design community would do without the comprehensive and unparalleled services offered by Childress Furniture and Fabrics.

My inaugural journey to the vast warehouse on Ferris Street was shrouded in a mix of anticipation and slight apprehension. For years, I’d heard whispers and tales from fellow photo stylists about this mythical “fantasyland of fabric and trim” nestled within an unexpected part of the city. One friend humorously cautioned, “It’s in a funky part of town, but just when you start to feel a prickle of worry, you’ll round a corner and see a cluster of interior designers’ Mercedes and luxury SUVs. That’s how you’ll know you’ve arrived at the mecca of Dallas custom upholstery.” This quirky guidance proved to be uncannily accurate, building a memorable prelude to what would become an enduring professional relationship and personal admiration.

Stepping through the colossal dock doors in the sweltering Dallas summer of 1989 was an experience that transcended the physical discomfort of the then-un-air-conditioned space. The heat was instantly forgotten, eclipsed by the sheer spectacle before my eyes. My gaze was captured by an endless expanse of textiles, each roll promising new possibilities for Dallas interior design projects. There were rolls of lush, shimmering velvets, their pile inviting to the touch; crisp, breathable linens hinting at understated elegance; soft, iridescent silks whispering luxury; and rich, robust leathers exuding timeless sophistication. It was a veritable symphony of textures and colors, an overwhelming yet utterly inspiring display for any designer. Amidst this textile wonderland, a man approached me, his smile the broadest and most genuinely welcoming I had ever encountered. He offered assistance with an easy warmth that immediately put me at ease. That affable gentleman was Kenny Childress, one of the six remarkable Childress siblings, whose family name has become synonymous with excellence in Dallas bespoke furniture and fabrics.

The remarkable Dallas chapter of the Childress legacy commenced in 1958, an era of burgeoning post-war prosperity and new opportunities across America. Barbara and Eugene Childress, driven by an adventurous spirit and the promise of a fresh start, embarked on a cross-country journey from Chattanooga, Tennessee, with their sights set on California. Fate, however, had other plans. Their car experienced an unexpected breakdown on Grand Avenue, right here in Dallas. What began as a temporary setback for repairs soon blossomed into a serendipitous discovery. As the car repairs extended longer than anticipated, they rented a modest apartment, giving them a chance to experience the city’s vibrant energy.

Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Barbara fondly recalled, “We decided Dallas was good. There was a lot of work here, so we stayed and found jobs at a burgeoning furniture company, Olive & Myers Manufacturing.” This initial employment immersed them in the heart of the furniture industry, providing invaluable experience and a clear vision for their future. For architecture and history enthusiasts, it’s noteworthy that the very building where they honed their craft, located at 2200 Young Street, has since been designated a landmark by the City of Dallas, standing as one of the last remaining factory buildings in the city’s vibrant downtown core – a silent testament to the industrial heritage of Dallas home furnishings.

Founder and visionary master upholsterer, Eugene Childress, whose enduring work ethic and passion for craftsmanship laid the foundation for a Dallas institution.

It didn’t take long for Barbara and Eugene, armed with their growing expertise and an unwavering entrepreneurial spirit, to recognize that establishing their own business was the true path forward. With determination, they secured a small building on Forest Avenue, ingeniously partitioning it to serve both as their family home in the rear and the nascent operations of what would soon become a thriving family upholstery business in the front. This humble beginning, fueled by tireless dedication, marked the true genesis of Childress Furniture and Fabrics. As their family grew and their business flourished, their need for space expanded. They meticulously relocated their operations from Peak Street to Main Street, and then to Canton Street, each move reflecting their steady growth and commitment to serving the evolving Dallas custom furniture market. A pivotal moment arrived with an unexpected electrical fire on Canton Street. Without missing a beat, displaying an extraordinary level of resolve and agility, they swiftly relocated to Walton Street and were remarkably back up and running their operations on that very same day. This extraordinary anecdote speaks volumes about the indomitable work ethic, resilience, and unwavering commitment to their craft that defines the Childress family – qualities that continue to drive their success as a premier Dallas fabric store and custom furniture builder.

Cultivating a Legacy: The Evolution of a Premier Dallas Design Resource

The spirit of entrepreneurship and dedication seamlessly transitioned to the next generation. Five of Barbara and Eugene’s six children wholeheartedly joined the company: Mike, Brian, Sherri, Debbie, Kenny, and Kristi. Sadly, Mike, a visionary force within the family, passed away suddenly in 2017, leaving an indelible mark on the business. Prior to the late 1980s, Mike played a crucial role in the company’s customer engagement, often traveling directly to clients’ homes to showcase fabric samples. This personalized approach was highly valued, but Mike, with his forward-thinking mindset, recognized a shift in customer preferences. Debbie vividly recalls a day when Mike returned and declared it was time for a transformative change. He believed that clients yearned for a more immersive experience, a chance to see and feel substantial pieces of fabric, to truly envision them in their spaces for Dallas home decor.

It was Mike’s groundbreaking idea to integrate a dedicated fabric store into their established upholstery business, a move that would redefine Childress’s offerings and elevate their status in the Dallas design community. In 1989, a prime location at 2512 Ferris Street became available, presenting both immense opportunity and significant challenges. The family instinctively knew this was the right strategic move, despite the daunting prospect of such a substantial expansion.

“We were absolutely petrified,” Kenny confessed, recalling the anxious days leading up to the grand opening. “Every significant move we made felt incredibly scary. When we purchased the Ferris building, we weren’t even sure we would be able to consistently meet the mortgage payments. Yet, we forged ahead, opening our doors on a Saturday morning. To our immense delight and relief, four customers walked in! We closed at 1 o’clock that day, and my brother Mike and I sat together on the dock, brimming with a quiet, happy satisfaction. Four customers might seem like a small number now, but back then, for a newly opened Dallas fabric store in a new location, it was a tremendous affirmation. Our initial worries quickly transformed into unexpected challenges. Within just three or four months, our biggest ‘problem’ was finding enough parking spaces for all our enthusiastic customers!” This rapid success underscored the pent-up demand for a comprehensive Dallas interior design resource that combined a vast fabric selection with unparalleled custom upholstery services.

Initially, the Childress company occupied the back portion of the sprawling Ferris Street warehouse, while Pilgrim’s Pride and Buy Rite Auto Supply shared the coveted Good Latimer side of the building, which also boasted ample parking. The trajectory of their growth, however, made the next move almost inevitable. As soon as circumstances allowed, the Childress family strategically acquired the front section of the warehouse. This expansion was a game-changer. They immediately commenced knocking down walls and meticulously painting, transforming the Good Latimer frontage into a grand new store entrance. This significant expansion was not merely about increasing square footage; it was a deliberate and visionary step that allowed the family to prominently showcase another cornerstone of their business: their expertise in custom furniture manufacturing.

“We realized we were virtually remodeling half of the furniture we were reupholstering,” Kenny explained, highlighting the natural progression of their services. “After a few years of this, we thought, ‘what the heck?’ We had an abundance of sketches and design pictures, but initially, no physical samples to display. A customer would come in, eager to order a custom sofa in Dallas, and understandably ask if it would be comfortable. We, of course, knew it would be, thanks to our decades of expertise in upholstery services and construction. Our customers, built on years of trust, were willing to take a chance on us.” It was Mike who brilliantly conceived the idea of having samples upholstered in pristine white fabric. This ingenious approach allowed the timeless frames of their custom-built furniture to speak for themselves, empowering customers to easily visualize their own fabric choices and personal design visions without the distraction of pre-selected patterns or colors. This innovation cemented Childress’s reputation as a leading resource for bespoke furniture Dallas designers and homeowners cherish.

A Fabric of Family and Fortitude: Woven Together Through Hardship and Success

The journey of Childress Furniture and Fabrics has been a dynamic tapestry, intricately woven with periods of growth, adaptation, and unwavering dedication. Over the years, their expansion included taking over the Fabric Factory, a strategic move to broaden their market reach and offerings. They also ventured into new territories, opening and later closing a store in Frisco, a testament to their willingness to innovate and adapt to market demands. Like any thriving, multi-generational business, their path has been marked by both profound hardships and significant losses, alongside well-deserved celebrations and triumphant successes. Yet, through every ebb and flow, every challenge and victory, the Childress family has faced it all, united and resolute.

This is undeniably a close-knit group, bound by more than just blood, but by a shared passion for Dallas custom furniture and a commitment to their craft. While working with family naturally presents its unique set of challenges and occasional disagreements, each member of the Childress clan has skillfully found and cultivated their perfect niche within the company. Kenny adeptly manages the bustling Dallas store, ensuring smooth operations and providing expert guidance to customers. Brian meticulously oversees the workroom, where the magic of custom upholstery and furniture building truly happens. Debbie expertly runs the Addison store, extending the Childress legacy to another vital part of the metropolitan area. Kristi diligently handles all the intricate bookkeeping, maintaining the financial health of the enterprise. And though Eugene passed away in 2001, his spirit of entrepreneurialism and craftsmanship lives on, with Barbara, the indomitable matriarch, still keeping a watchful and loving eye over the family business, ensuring its values and standards endure.

Kenny candidly shared insights into the dynamics of working with loved ones: “I think you are inherently harder on your family when it comes to business expectations. But you know, you can’t be that hard. Ultimately, we all get along great because we respect each other’s contributions and boundaries. We each have our own specialized niche, which helps maintain harmony and efficiency.” He continued, emphasizing the vibrancy of their daily work: “Every day is different, bringing new challenges and creative opportunities. We take an immense amount of pride in what we do, and that dedication translates into enduring relationships. We’ve had loyal customers for years, some for decades, and they’ve truly become dear friends to us. It’s been a heck of a lot of fun, seeing visions come to life and building lasting connections in the Dallas design community!” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the heart and soul of Childress: a place where expertise meets warmth, and business cultivates genuine friendships, making it a true Dallas design destination for all things fabric and furniture.

For those seeking the unparalleled quality and personalized service that defines Childress, a visit to their flagship Dallas store on Good Latimer is an absolute must. There, you’re highly likely to be greeted by Kenny’s effervescent wife, Nancy, whose warmth and expertise are a hallmark of the Childress experience. Or you might encounter Kottun Cottongame, a beloved figure who, having been with the store since 2004, is practically family herself, embodying the welcoming spirit of the establishment. And if fortune truly smiles upon you, your visit might coincide with a special appearance by Turbo or Kaizer, the adored canine companions who add an extra layer of charm and personality to this iconic Dallas fabric and furniture haven. These delightful details underscore that Childress is more than just a business; it’s a vibrant, living entity, deeply rooted in family, community, and an enduring passion for beautiful design.
