In a heartwarming demonstration of community spirit and architectural passion, Lee Lewis Construction Inc. (LLCI) has teamed up with the ambitious students from Highland Park ISD’s Moody Advanced Professional Studies (MAPS) program. Their joint endeavor? To construct an extraordinary playhouse for Dallas CASA’s highly anticipated Parade of Playhouses, an event dedicated to advocating for child victims of abuse and neglect. This collaboration, spearheaded by LLCI Senior Project Director Patrick Surratt, perfectly blends professional expertise with youthful creativity, all in support of an invaluable cause.

The Dallas CASA Parade of Playhouses stands as a beloved annual tradition, drawing families and philanthropists alike to NorthPark Center. Scheduled for July 15-31, this cherished event not only delights attendees with its whimsical and expertly crafted playhouses but also serves as a crucial fundraiser and awareness campaign for the city’s Court-Appointed Special Advocates. Since 1996, NorthPark Center has proudly hosted this event, transforming into a vibrant showcase of imagination and generosity, all aimed at providing a voice and support for children navigating the complex and often traumatic foster care system.

Building Dreams: Lee Lewis Construction Joins the Cause

For Lee Lewis Construction, a company renowned for its significant commercial projects across K-12 schools, medical facilities, and churches, participating in the Parade of Playhouses marks an exciting and meaningful new venture. Patrick Surratt expressed his enthusiasm when Highland Park ISD’s MAPS program reached out, proposing a partnership that would bridge academic learning with real-world application for their students. This unique collaboration is more than just building a structure; it’s about mentoring the next generation of builders and designers, while simultaneously contributing to a profoundly important community initiative.

The synergy between LLCI and HPISD MAPS began with a meticulous classroom project. Last year, the dedicated MAPS students embarked on the intricate task of interpreting original architectural drawings to construct a scaled model dollhouse. This hands-on experience not only honed their design and construction skills but also prepared them for the larger-scale replica playhouse they would help LLCI bring to life. This educational component underscores the enduring value of the partnership, providing students with invaluable insights into the architecture and construction industries while fostering a sense of social responsibility.

Lee Lewis Construction Inc. is one of 21 esteemed builders and architects contributing to the 13 unique playhouses featured in this year’s Parade. This marks LLCI’s inaugural participation, making their contribution all the more special. The playhouse designed by LLCI and the MAPS students holds a delightful secret: the intricately student-built dollhouse will be carefully placed inside the larger playhouse. The fortunate winner of the raffle will thus take home not one, but two magnificent architectural pieces, symbolizing both professional craftsmanship and budding talent.

An Architectural Homage: The Williams House Replica

The inspiration for LLCI’s playhouse is deeply rooted in local architectural history, paying homage to the iconic Williams House in University Park. “Our playhouse is based off the Williams House in University Park,” Surratt shared. This historic residence, constructed in 1933, was the masterpiece of renowned architect David Reichard Williams. Though unrelated to the original owners, Williams left an indelible mark on Texas architecture, earning recognition as a preeminent figure in modern Texas regional architecture. His designs elegantly blended functionalism with local materials and climate considerations, creating structures that were both visually striking and deeply integrated with their surroundings.

The playhouse carefully replicates key elements of this historical gem. “We are focusing on the right side of the house, where the balcony is,” Surratt elaborated, detailing the design philosophy behind their miniature recreation. “We will have a false balcony to match the look of the building. We will also have some brick veneer on the lower half of the playhouse.” These thoughtful details ensure that the playhouse is not merely a structure but a scaled work of art, reflecting the architectural integrity and aesthetic charm of its original inspiration. This meticulous attention to design showcases the expertise of LLCI while also educating students and the public about the rich architectural heritage of the region.

The Art of Precision: Detail Work in Construction

While building a playhouse might seem like a departure from LLCI’s usual large-scale commercial undertakings, Surratt emphasized that the fundamental principles of quality construction remain paramount. “The detail work is the most crucial aspect of any construction,” he asserted. He highlighted how detailed drawings are indispensable, guiding contractors on critical elements such as waterproofing a building or implementing intricate design features. These detailed blueprints ensure that every component of a structure functions as intended, contributing to its longevity, safety, and aesthetic appeal.

“If you don’t review and understand the details, then your building will not work to the full intent of its design,” Surratt continued, underscoring LLCI’s unwavering commitment to precision. This philosophy is evident in every project they undertake, from sprawling school campuses to a charming playhouse. “We pay great attention to the details because if you get the details right, then the rest of the project will go smoothly with no major concerns.” This rigorous approach to detail not only minimizes potential issues but also ensures that the final product, whether a medical facility or a child’s dream playhouse, stands as a testament to exceptional craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

Navigating Challenges: Construction in a Changing Landscape

Surratt estimated that the construction of the playhouse would take approximately one month, a testament to the efficiency and dedication of the LLCI team and their student partners. However, he also acknowledged the broader challenges facing the construction industry today. “COVID and the environment we are in has caused some issues with getting materials sometimes,” he explained. The global supply chain disruptions have significantly extended lead times for various products, transforming a typical three-to-four-week wait into an eight-to-nine-week ordeal.

Despite these industry-wide hurdles, Surratt expressed confidence that the playhouse project would proceed without major hitches. The smaller scale and the localized nature of the materials for a playhouse mitigate many of the complex logistics associated with larger commercial builds, allowing the team to focus intently on the artistry and precision required for this special creation. This resilience in adapting to a dynamic environment highlights LLCI’s operational strength and commitment to delivering on their promises, regardless of external pressures.

Dallas CASA: A Beacon of Hope for Children

Beyond the excitement of construction and design, the core motivation for Lee Lewis Construction’s participation, and indeed for all the builders in the Parade of Playhouses, is the profound joy of giving back to the community. Patrick Surratt articulated this sentiment eloquently, emphasizing the critical role Dallas CASA plays in safeguarding the future of the nation’s children. “Kids are the future of this country, and if no one is there to support and show direction, then there will be no future for America,” he stated, capturing the essence of CASA’s mission.

Dallas CASA provides crucial support for children who have endured unimaginable hardship—situations no child should ever face. These Court-Appointed Special Advocates step in to offer a voice for children caught in the legal system due to abuse or neglect, ensuring their best interests are represented. “Without this support, most children would be lost in the system or put in worse scenarios than they start off in,” Surratt explained, highlighting the dire consequences without CASA’s intervention. The organization acts as a lifeline, guiding these vulnerable children towards safety, stability, and a brighter future.

The Parade of Playhouses is more than just an exhibition; it’s a powerful engine for change, enabling Dallas CASA to recruit, train, and supervise more volunteers who tirelessly advocate for children in need. Each playhouse, meticulously designed and constructed with love, represents a tangible commitment to these children. Attendees at NorthPark Center will have the opportunity to marvel at these miniature architectural wonders, purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win one, and contribute directly to a cause that impacts thousands of young lives annually. This fusion of creativity, philanthropy, and community engagement makes the event an unmissable highlight of the Dallas summer calendar.

Generous support from sponsors like Crest Cadillac / INFINITI / Volvo, the presenting sponsor for this year’s event, is instrumental in making the Parade of Playhouses a resounding success. Their commitment, alongside that of builders like Lee Lewis Construction and educators like HPISD MAPS, underscores a collective dedication to fostering a safe and nurturing environment for all children. The custom-designed and built playhouses, each a testament to imagination and skill, await their new homes, promising joy to their winners and, more importantly, hope to the children served by Dallas CASA.
