For anyone passionate about vintage finds, artisanal crafts, and truly unique fashion, encountering Flea Style founder Brittany Cobb at a market is like finding a human compass. Follow her, and she’ll inevitably guide you directly to the most coveted, one-of-a-kind items. This instinct isn’t just luck; it’s the product of years, even decades, of dedicated practice. Growing up in Southern California, Cobb’s childhood was defined by exciting excursions to fairs, sprawling antique malls, and bustling swap meets, where the thrill of the hunt became deeply ingrained in her spirit.

“When I made the move to Texas for my college years, I quickly realized how much I missed that distinctive way of shopping – the joy of discovery, the stories behind each item, the connection to local makers,” Cobb recalls. It was this profound nostalgia and a clear gap in the market that spurred her to action. After establishing her life in Dallas, Cobb decided it was time to recreate that beloved market experience, but with her own unique vision and entrepreneurial flair.

“At the time, I was working as a lifestyle editor, which meant I had hundreds of incredibly talented creatives right at my fingertips. It felt like pure kismet – the perfect alignment of circumstances for launching a market that would truly celebrate their artistry.”

The journey began in 2009 with the grand debut of The Dallas Flea. From its inception, the market was driven by a powerful dual mission: to provide crucial support and a vibrant platform for small businesses, and to champion unique, individual style that stood apart from mainstream retail. “That commitment was always my guiding principle, my north star,” Cobb emphasizes. “It was, and continues to be, an absolutely enormous part of our enduring success and the deep connection we’ve built with our community.” The Dallas Flea quickly became more than just a place to shop; it transformed into a cultural hub where creativity flourished, and shoppers could find truly distinctive pieces while directly supporting local artisans.

The overwhelming positive reception and undeniable potential of The Dallas Flea soon prompted a significant life and career shift for Cobb. Not long after its launch, she made the bold decision to leave her established career in journalism behind, diving headfirst into the exhilarating world of full-time entrepreneurship. This pivotal moment marked the evolution of The Dallas Flea into what we know today as Flea Style – a sprawling retail haven and a veritable mecca for anyone seeking perennially cool, effortlessly chic, and authentically styled goods. Its flagship home is a magnificent 5,000-square-foot historical building nestled in the heart of Deep Ellum, a district renowned for its artistic energy and vibrant cultural scene. This iconic location perfectly encapsulates the brand’s vintage soul and contemporary spirit.

“I never approached this venture with a rigid, predetermined idea of what it was ultimately going to become. Instead, I cultivated an environment of constant openness to new ideas, a willingness to ‘fail fast’ and learn from every experience, and an unshakeable commitment to staying genuinely curious about what our customers and community truly desired.”

Today, the Flea Style empire has blossomed into a network of five distinctive brick-and-mortar locations, each thoughtfully designed to cater to its unique market. These stores vary significantly in size, from the intimate 300-square-foot boutique found within Fort Worth’s luxurious Hotel Drover, offering a curated selection for discerning travelers, to the expansive 6,100-square-foot flagship at The Star in Frisco, providing a comprehensive shopping experience. Brittany Cobb’s approach to this impressive expansion is rooted in practical, common-sense strategy. “Our core principle is to be exactly where our customers are,” she explains. “This looks distinctly different in every single market we enter. Sometimes, our decision to open a new location is driven by securing an absolutely killer lease deal that aligns perfectly with our financial goals. At other times, we’ve been willing to take calculated risks for locations where our market research and intuition tell us the traffic patterns are spot-on for our unique product assortment, ensuring maximum visibility and customer engagement.” This adaptive strategy allows Flea Style to thrive in diverse retail environments, from high-end hotels to bustling entertainment districts.

Despite the varying sizes and locations, the curated merchandise mix across all Flea Style stores shares one unmistakable commonality: it all inherently screams “Brittany.” This signature aesthetic is immediately recognizable, reflecting Cobb’s distinct personal style and discerning eye. Shoppers will consistently find her iconic signature hats – indeed, it’s rare to see her without one – alongside an impressive collection of meticulously sourced vintage cowboy boots, each with its own story. The apparel section is dominated by thoughtfully selected Boho-inspired fashion pieces, characterized by flowing silhouettes, intricate details, and a free-spirited elegance. Every item in the store is handpicked to embody the Flea Style ethos, offering customers a piece of Brittany’s unique world.

The entrepreneurial spirit at Flea Style shows no signs of slowing down, with multiple exciting new locations already on the horizon. Beyond further expanding its strong presence within Texas with upcoming stores in Prosper and at the vibrant Dallas Farmer’s Market, Flea Style is poised for a significant milestone: its very first out-of-state location, opening its doors in Louisville, Kentucky. This move represents a bold step in the brand’s growth strategy, venturing into new markets while maintaining its authentic identity.

“As a fast-growth small business, the strategic plan is incredibly dynamic and genuinely changes on a daily basis,” Cobb openly shares, highlighting the agility and constant adaptation required in her role. “While I can’t definitively predict our exact footprint five or even ten years from now, one thing is absolutely certain: we will undoubtedly have many more Flea Style locations, both across Texas and in other states where there is a clear, passionate appreciation for what we do – for our unique style, our commitment to artisans, and the distinctive shopping experience we offer!” This vision speaks to a future filled with continued expansion, guided by passion and a deep understanding of their customer base.

We asked. Brittany answered: Insights from the Founder of Flea Style.

To gain a deeper understanding of the woman behind the brand, we sat down with Brittany Cobb for a quick Q&A session.

Describe your personal style: My personal style is an authentic reflection of my approach to everything in life: I am a maximalist through and through. You’ll never catch me leaving the house in something as understated as a simple slip dress and a ponytail. My style is inherently very layered, deeply bohemian, and always tells a rich story. For me, it’s about expressing creativity and personality through clothing and accessories. Typically, I’ll be wearing at least three distinct pieces, often layered or thoughtfully combined, always complemented by a statement hat. You’ll also spot me adorned with stacks of jewelry – rings, bracelets, necklaces – each piece often holding sentimental value. And, of course, a generously oversized bag is an absolute necessity, perfectly capable of carrying all my essentials and any unique treasures I might acquire throughout the day.

Must-have fashion item: Without a doubt, it’s my vintage men’s Rolex. In an age dominated by smartphones and digital screens, I still find immense value and elegance in using a classic watch to tell time. It’s more than just a timepiece; it’s a statement of enduring style, a nod to craftsmanship, and a tangible connection to history.

Favorite thing you sell at Flea Style: My absolute favorite items to sell are our hats. There’s truly nothing more rewarding or joyful than witnessing our customers immerse themselves in the creative process at our Hat Bar, carefully selecting each embellishment and designing the hat of their dreams. It’s an incredibly personal and artistic experience, and the joy on their faces when they see their vision come to life is unparalleled. It perfectly embodies the spirit of Flea Style – unique, personalized, and full of character.

Best advice you’ve ever received: The most impactful advice I’ve ever been given, and one that resonates deeply within the Flea Style culture, is the simple yet profound mantra: “Crawl, walk, run.” We implement this philosophy on a daily basis in absolutely everything we undertake at Flea Style. It’s especially crucial when we’re embarking on a new project, whether it’s launching a new product line, exploring a new market, or implementing a new internal system. This advice encourages a measured, strategic approach, ensuring that we build a strong foundation, test our ideas, learn from incremental steps, and only then accelerate when we’re confident and well-prepared. It helps prevent burnout, minimizes risks, and fosters sustainable growth.
