Dallas CASA’s Parade of Playhouses: Building Hope, One Dream Home at a Time

Every year, the Dallas landscape transforms with an event that marries architectural creativity with profound philanthropy. At CandysDirt, while we often highlight magnificent homes and innovative designs, today we shine a spotlight on truly special structures: the extraordinary playhouses of Dallas CASA’s Parade of Playhouses. These aren’t just charming miniature dwellings; they are powerful symbols of hope, purpose-built to benefit some of the most vulnerable members of our community: abused and neglected children in Dallas.

This beloved annual spectacle invites the public to marvel at whimsical, custom-designed playhouses, masterfully crafted by local architects, builders, and designers. Far more than just an exhibition, this event serves as a cornerstone for Dallas CASA, raising critical funds and awareness to support children who have experienced unimaginable trauma. The Parade of Playhouses offers a unique blend of community engagement, artistic expression, and a deep commitment to social good, drawing visitors from across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and beyond to NorthPark Center.

Experience the Magic: The Parade of Playhouses at NorthPark Center

For a limited time each summer, the bustling halls of NorthPark Center become home to an enchanting display of architectural ingenuity. From July 15 to 31, during regular mall hours, families and art enthusiasts alike can wander through the stunning collection of playhouses, each a testament to the boundless imagination and generosity of Dallas’s design community. These aren’t your typical backyard sheds; they are elaborate, intricate, and often themed creations that spark wonder in children and adults alike.

The playhouses themselves are the stars of the show, but their true value lies in their purpose. Each one is generously created and donated to Dallas CASA, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for abused and neglected children. As the event culminates, these fantastical structures are made available to win through a raffle, offering participants the chance to take home a unique piece of art while contributing to a life-changing cause. Every single dollar raised from the raffle directly supports Dallas CASA’s mission, providing essential resources and volunteer advocates for children navigating the complex and often frightening protective care system.

Kathleen M. LaValle, Dallas CASA Executive Director and President, eloquently captures the essence of this initiative: “The playhouses represent our hope for abused and neglected children in Dallas. While some children dream of having their very own fantasy playhouses, abused children dream of having safe and lasting homes. Our ultimate goal is for all children to grow up in loving and permanent homes. Sadly, a significant number of abused children in protective care in Dallas County currently do not have a CASA volunteer advocate. We eagerly anticipate the day when we have enough dedicated volunteers to ensure every child has the voice they desperately need and deserve.”

Dallas CASA: Advocating for a Brighter Future

At its core, Dallas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is an organization committed to ensuring that every child who has experienced abuse or neglect has a safe, permanent, and nurturing home. When a child is removed from their home due to abuse or neglect, they enter a daunting legal and social services system. This is where Dallas CASA volunteers step in, acting as a consistent, compassionate adult presence and a powerful voice for these children in court.

The Parade of Playhouses, as Dallas CASA’s premier awareness event, not only generates vital funds but also plays an indispensable role in educating over 1 million visitors annually about the critical work of volunteer advocates. Many of these visitors may not be aware of the profound impact a CASA volunteer can have on a child’s life, making the event a crucial platform for community outreach and recruitment.

The Indispensable Role of a CASA Volunteer

Dallas CASA volunteers are ordinary people doing extraordinary work. They undergo extensive training to become Court Appointed Special Advocates, equipped to gather independent information to help judges make informed decisions about a child’s welfare. Their responsibilities include:

  • Investigation: Interviewing children, parents, foster parents, teachers, and social workers.
  • Reporting: Providing objective, well-researched recommendations to the court.
  • Advocacy: Ensuring the child’s best interests are prioritized throughout the legal process.
  • Consistency: Often being the only stable adult figure in a child’s life during a period of immense uncertainty and fear.

In 2015 alone, more than 921 dedicated local volunteers advocated for 2,680 Dallas children. While this represents a significant achievement, the stark reality is that nearly 2,000 abused children in Dallas were still without a CASA volunteer. This gap underscores the urgent need for more community members to step forward and become advocates, offering stability and a voice to children who have been silenced by trauma.

Mike Brosin, a Dallas CASA board member and Managing Partner with Crest Cadillac/Crest Infiniti—a proud sponsor of the event—shared a powerful personal anecdote: “For 21 years, the Parade of Playhouses has brought awareness to the plight of local children removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. This event brings both needed funds and critical awareness to the needs of these children. I first became involved with Dallas CASA after my wife saw the playhouses and was moved to become an advocate. If one of these houses can bring one more advocate who helps find permanency for one child, we’ll know a life has been changed forever.” His words highlight the ripple effect of the event, inspiring not just donations but also direct action through volunteering.

Driving Growth and Expanding Reach: The “Abused Children Can’t Wait” Campaign

Dallas CASA’s commitment to serving every child in need is not new; it’s a strategic imperative that has driven remarkable growth. The agency has been on an unprecedented growth trajectory since 2012, propelled by its ambitious $37 million capital campaign, aptly named “Abused Children Can’t Wait.” This campaign marked a pivotal shift in the organization’s focus, moving from serving children who had an advocate to urgently addressing the needs of children who did not. The ultimate goal remains clear: to ensure every child in protective care in Dallas County has a dedicated CASA volunteer.

The impact of this focused effort has been profound:

  • Since 2012, Dallas CASA staff has grown by an impressive 52 percent.
  • The number of dedicated volunteer advocates has increased by 50 percent.
  • Critically, the number of children served has surged by 53 percent.
  • To accommodate this vital expansion, the organization has moved into a new, state-of-the-art 25,020-square-foot building, providing enhanced facilities for training and support for its growing team of staff and volunteers.

This period of significant expansion has also seen key leadership appointments, further strengthening the organization’s capacity to achieve its mission. Dallas CASA recently welcomed Becca Haynes Leonard as its new Director of Development, just in time for the Parade of Playhouses. Leonard brings a decade of invaluable nonprofit development experience, having previously contributed her expertise to Austin Street Center, Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, and Attitudes & Attire. Her arrival underscores Dallas CASA’s ongoing commitment to robust fundraising and strategic growth.

With an unwavering vision, Dallas CASA aspires to become the largest nonprofit CASA program in the country, ultimately serving every abused and neglected child in protective care. The funds raised from events like the Parade of Playhouses are instrumental in fueling this ambitious growth and sustaining the agency’s vital services, ensuring that no child’s voice goes unheard.
