In the heart of every school, teachers dedicate their lives to shaping young minds, often working tirelessly behind the scenes. Yet, the spaces designated for their respite and collaboration can sometimes fall short, inadvertently reflecting a lack of appreciation. This was the case at Merriman Park Elementary (MPE), where a once-dreary teachers’ lounge was not only dark and dysfunctional but also offered little comfort to the 60 educators who relied on it daily. However, thanks to the vision and dedication of a few extraordinary parents and supportive local businesses, this overlooked area has been transformed into a beacon of warmth, functionality, and community spirit.

The story began with an inspiring email from Katy Hancock, a proactive PTA officer at Merriman Park Elementary. Her message wasn’t just a simple update; it was an account of how a dream of revitalizing the teachers’ lounge was blossoming into reality. What started as a modest idea by the PTA to perhaps add “a few cabinets and a new countertop” with some leftover funds, quickly grew into something far more ambitious and impactful, driven by the unexpected generosity and expertise within the school community itself.

From Drab to Dynamic: A Community-Powered Teachers’ Lounge Makeover

The initial state of the Merriman Park Elementary teachers’ lounge was a stark contrast to the vibrant learning environment it served. It was a space that had become tired and uninspiring, a reflection of years of wear and tear without significant upgrades. Teachers, despite their tireless efforts, found little solace or genuine rejuvenation in a room that felt more like an afterthought than a sanctuary. The challenge was clear: how to transform this neglected area into a functional, welcoming haven for educators, all while operating on a limited budget?

The turning point arrived when Kim Armstrong, an MPE parent and the owner of Kim Armstrong Interior Design, graciously volunteered to manage the project. Her professional expertise brought an immediate uplift to the scale of ambitions. What was initially conceived as a minor refresh quickly expanded under her guidance, captivating the imagination of other parents and local businesses. As Katy Hancock enthusiastically put it, “Kim stepped in, some amazing MPE families stepped up, and OMG…we have ourselves one very amazing teacher’s lounge.”

Kim wasn’t alone in her endeavors. Fellow Merriman Park parents Derek Kellogg of Richland Renovations and Kevin Bryant of Bentwood Kitchens also joined the team, offering invaluable contributions. Their companies provided not only significant labor but also materials and expertise, transforming a modest PTA budget of $2,500 into a comprehensive, high-quality renovation. This collaborative spirit among parents and local entrepreneurs showcased the profound impact a community can have when rallying behind a shared cause.

A Thoughtful Design Process: Crafting a Sanctuary for Educators

Upon visiting the newly completed space, the transformation was nothing short of astonishing. The once gloomy room was now bathed in natural light, exuding an inviting ambiance that spoke volumes about the value placed on the school’s teachers. The success of the project lay not just in its aesthetic appeal but in its thoughtful design, meticulously planned by Kim Armstrong.

Kim began with a comprehensive design phase, which included interviewing teachers and parents who regularly used the lounge. This crucial step helped identify both the existing pain points and the desired improvements. Key takeaways included the need for a larger serving area, a more accommodating seating arrangement to host more people simultaneously, and discreet, hidden storage solutions. Furthermore, Armstrong masterfully designed the space to divert attention from immutable elements, such as the existing ceiling tiles, creating an overall cohesive and elegant look.

The financial aspect, though initially modest, was bolstered by an ingenious community-wide effort. While the core companies handled the heavy lifting, the broader Merriman Park family was invited to contribute to furnishing the space through a “Sign Up Genius” platform. This allowed individuals to sponsor specific items, ranging from cabinet hardware costing as little as $25 to banquette chairs and cushions for $250. This inclusive approach fostered a sense of collective ownership and amplified community involvement, proving that every contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference.

Derek Kellogg recalled the pivotal moment when the project expanded from a minor update to a full-scale renovation: “At first, it was going to be a small bit of cabinetry, so we approached Kevin (who has a daughter at Merriman Park). Kevin said, ‘Let’s do it right, let’s do it big.'” This bold vision, coupled with the expert craftsmanship of Bryant and Kellogg (who handled installation and construction), and Armstrong’s meticulous planning, budget oversight, and even decorative stenciling (the geometric design at the back of the room is a true work of art), brought the vision to life. Katy Hancock, meanwhile, expertly rallied the parent community, ensuring widespread support and participation. Once the room was cleared, the entire installation process took approximately four days, a testament to the efficient teamwork involved.

The Unveiling: A Space Reimagined for Merriman Park Educators

The completed teachers’ lounge is now a vibrant testament to community dedication, awash in the school’s colors of gold and blue, but with a sophisticated design palette. This sophisticated use of color and intelligent layout transformed a previously cramped and uninspiring area into a highly functional and welcoming room where teachers and parents alike can comfortably spend time. The thoughtful design caters to diverse needs, from quiet reflection to lively collaboration and even social events.

Along one wall, a long, inviting banquette provides ample seating, complemented by additional tables and chairs to maximize capacity. Clusterings of round tables occupy the middle of the room, offering flexible arrangements for various activities. A large, central island serves multiple purposes: a generous workspace, a convenient buffet-style serving area for events, and ingeniously, the other side of this island cleverly conceals essential storage. This innovative use of space effectively addresses the teachers’ initial requests for expanded serving areas, better seating, and hidden storage, making the lounge truly responsive to their needs.

Inspiring Action: A Blueprint for Other Schools to Follow

The remarkable transformation at Merriman Park Elementary serves as a powerful model for schools across North Texas, demonstrating what can be achieved with community involvement and strategic planning. Inspired by this success, many schools might wonder how they can replicate such a feat. Here are invaluable tips from the parents who made it happen:

1. Leverage Your PTA Budget Wisely

Katy Hancock advises PTAs to be proactive in reviewing their end-of-year budgets. “For PTAs, I would start with being mindful of your end-of-the-year budget,” she states. Identifying surplus funds, even small amounts, can serve as a crucial starting point for a project. This initial budget can then be a catalyst, signaling to the community that the PTA is committed to an improvement endeavor and ready to invest.

2. Cultivate a Culture of Asking

Even if significant funds aren’t immediately available, Kim Armstrong emphasizes the power of ambition and direct requests. “If schools want to do this, one, it’s something they can strive for — they can set it as a long-term goal,” she explains. “And two, they can always ask for donations.” Her advice is simple yet profound: “If you don’t ask, you won’t receive.” This applies not only to monetary donations but also to materials, services, and expert advice.

3. Tap into Your Community’s Hidden Talents

Both Armstrong and Hancock stress the importance of assessing the talent pool within your parent and local community. “You might be able to find a parent that is a contractor, or just is really handy,” Armstrong points out. Many professionals are eager to give back. Derek Kellogg confirms this sentiment: “Lots of builders like me want to contribute to the communities they work in.” Reaching out to local businesses, particularly those whose owners have children in the school, can uncover a wealth of resources and expertise that might otherwise go untapped.

4. Prioritize Project Management

Finding a dedicated individual or team to oversee the project is paramount. As Kim Armstrong demonstrated, a project manager is essential for everything from design and budget adherence to timeline management. If your school doesn’t have an interior designer among its parents, Armstrong suggests reaching out to your local American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) chapter. These organizations often connect schools with interior decorators willing to offer pro bono advice or assist in sourcing materials to stay within budget, ensuring professional guidance for aesthetic and functional success.

5. Explore Educational Opportunities

Derek Kellogg highlights an often-overlooked benefit: integrating the project into the school’s curriculum. “It can also be a learning experience for students — they can learn through the project,” he suggests. “You can tie it in.” Students could learn about design, construction, budgeting, or community organizing, turning the renovation into a hands-on educational endeavor that fosters pride and engagement.

Ultimately, as Kim Armstrong succinctly puts it, “Basically, if there’s a will, there’s a way.” The Merriman Park Elementary story is a testament to the power of collective will, community spirit, and strategic execution.
