The story of this remodel truly began three years ago when the Sigmonds listed their previous East Dallas home with David Collier of David Griffin & Co. What they didn’t anticipate was the sheer speed at which their unique property would be snapped up. While seasoned real estate professionals like Collier recognized the immense appeal of their style, Erick and Chelsea, in their characteristic humility, hadn’t fully grasped the extraordinary impact of their refined aesthetic. The rapid sale, though a clear triumph, left them temporarily without a home base, accelerating their plans for their newly acquired property.

Their new residence was, by all accounts, a complete overhaul waiting to happen. It was a blank slate that demanded significant attention and a discerning eye. With only one functional shower and a host of cosmetic and structural needs, the house was a true fixer-upper. Yet, this challenging canvas was precisely what drew the Sigmonds in. Their ability to look beyond the immediate flaws and envision the profound potential within an older property is a testament to their unique perspective and boundless creativity. This inherent foresight allowed them to embrace the extensive “TLC” required, transforming what many would see as daunting into an exciting opportunity.

The Unrivaled Talent of “Non-Professional” Designers

What makes the Sigmond’s design prowess even more remarkable is that neither Erick nor Chelsea are professional designers or artists by trade. Erick applies his strategic thinking as a strategist at an advertising agency, while Chelsea excels as a regional manager at DryBar. Yet, their intrinsic talent for interior design is undeniable. It’s an open secret that Chelsea’s innate eye for aesthetics and design vision has been the driving force behind their stunning transformations. In fact, Erick himself readily credits Chelsea’s exceptional sense of style for guiding their projects to their elevated conclusions, and she is now even available for interior design consulting work.

After: The same space, now transformed into a sophisticated and inviting area.

However, it would be an oversight not to acknowledge Erick’s significant contributions. The stunning exterior landscaping, both front and back, is entirely his creation. He recounted how the backyard was initially an overgrown jungle, cluttered with trees and even an abandoned bedframe. Through his meticulous design and hard work, it has been transformed into a perfectly manicured lawn, an impressive feat that even withstood a recent severe drought, showcasing both beauty and resilience.

Stepping inside, one of their first and most impactful decisions was to rip out the existing pink carpet and tile. This seemingly simple act led to an exciting discovery: original TERRAZZO floors beneath the tile in the front entry. Bringing this small, unexpected patch of terrazzo back to life instantly infused the home with character and a touch of vintage charm, setting the tone for the thoughtful restoration work that followed.

Redefining Spaces: Functionality Meets Modern Aesthetics

The original layout presented some unique challenges, particularly with the dining room, which was an expansive space situated immediately to the left upon entering the front door. It featured a swing door connecting to the kitchen, but its placement disrupted the flow. The Sigmonds ingeniously reimagined this area. They sealed off the swing door, added a strategic wall where a counter once stood, effectively defining a dedicated kitchen space and allowing for additional, much-needed cabinetry. This transformation not only enhanced the kitchen’s functionality but also its visual appeal, creating a clean, modern culinary hub.

Before: An interior space lacking modern appeal and definition.
Before renovation, a large, undefined interior area
After: The same space, artfully divided to create a functional home office or future bedroom.
After renovation, a sleek home office created from a larger room, featuring natural light

The remaining portion of that generously sized dining room was then brilliantly reconfigured into a versatile home office. With an eye toward future needs, this space was designed with the flexibility to easily convert into an additional bedroom. A sliding glass door from the office now opens onto a private porch, which has been fully gated to offer a tranquil retreat. This secluded outdoor haven, complete with an inflatable hot tub, provides peace and quiet, perfectly embodying their desire to create a dedicated guest suite that rivals the amenities of most high-end Airbnbs.

The newly refined kitchen seamlessly flows into a charming breakfast area and the main living room, fostering an open yet defined living experience. Tucked cleverly to the side of this main living space, a wet bar stands as a testament to Chelsea’s unwavering vision. Despite suggestions to remove it, she adamantly believed in its utility and charm. Her conviction paid off, as the wet bar has become an incredibly handy feature, offering convenient access to refreshments without needing to venture into the main kitchen. It’s a smart design choice that enhances the home’s entertaining capabilities and reinforces its unique character.

Sometimes Second Choice Becomes the Best Choice: The Secondary Bathroom Transformation

Among the many stunning transformations, the secondary bathroom stands out as one of the most delightful. Chelsea initially had her heart set on a specific, high-end Clay Imports tile, but its prohibitive cost—adding a staggering $9,000 to their budget—prompted a strategic pivot. This moment underscored Chelsea’s talent: not just in recognizing beautiful design, but in finding equally stunning, more reasonably priced solutions without compromising on aesthetic impact. The result was a triumph of resourceful design: a simple yet sophisticated four-by-four tile in the perfect shade of olive green for the walls, complemented by skinny-minnie white one-by-three tiles on the floor. This combination created a serene and stylish retreat that feels far more luxurious than its price tag suggests.

Every element in the bathroom was thoughtfully curated to create a cohesive and inviting ambiance. Natural wood grains infuse warmth, while modern mirrors add a touch of contemporary flair. A key design pivot also occurred with the lighting: instead of three planned sconces, the alignment with the mirrors didn’t allow for it. The elegant Schoolhouse Electric vanity light not only saved the day but stole the show, becoming a striking focal point. The fun, smiley-face hand towels from Baggu and the stylish shower curtain from Quiet Town add playful yet sophisticated accents, perfectly encapsulating the Sigmond’s unique blend of refined and approachable design. This bathroom beautifully demonstrates that creativity, resourcefulness, and a keen eye can turn a budget-conscious choice into a design highlight.

The Sigmond’s Secret Sources: Curating a Timeless Home

For those who admire the Sigmond’s distinctive style, the perennial question arises: where do they source their incredible pieces? Fortunately for us, Chelsea and Erick have generously compiled an extensive list of their beloved shops and online destinations, offering a roadmap to cultivating a similarly curated aesthetic.

After: The space reimagined with meticulous attention to detail and curated furnishings.
After renovation a beautifully curated interior with unique furniture and artwork

Their approach blends vintage charm with modern design, starting with a profound love for estate sales and vintage shops, where they uncover unique, character-rich treasures. For high-quality hardware and fixtures that stand the test of time, Rejuvenation is a trusted source. Quiet Town provides distinctive shower curtains, adding a touch of understated elegance to their bathrooms. To achieve those sought-after “bleached Marfa Chic vibes” and “desert cool vibes,” they turn to Citizenry and Article, respectively, for unique furniture and decor that evokes a sophisticated, earthy aesthetic. Schoolhouse Electric is a go-to for timeless, soon-to-be-iconic home goods that blend functionality with classic design.

They also expertly navigate more accessible brands, finding exceptional value at West Elm and Ikea—the latter proving that quality doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag. To elevate their Ikea pieces, they utilize Semihandmade for custom cabinetry fronts, allowing them to personalize and upscale their designs. Other cherished sources include Our Place, known for its functional and stylish kitchenware, and Big Wall for unique decorative accents. This diverse sourcing strategy allows the Sigmonds to create a home that feels uniquely theirs, reflecting a blend of old and new, luxurious and practical.

Beyond furnishings, their home is adorned with incredible artwork, each piece telling a story. Standout pieces include the captivating embroidered art created by their talented friend, Bonnie Bridges—works that are truly exceptional and infused with personal meaning. Additionally, original art by their friend and amazing painter, Ricardo Ferrer, adds vibrant color and artistic depth throughout their meticulously designed spaces. These personal touches underscore the couple’s commitment to supporting artists and surrounding themselves with beauty that resonates on a deeper level.
