Our comprehensive renovation in 2015 was driven by a strong desire to honor and preserve the few remaining authentic elements. We believe that the room which will truly captivate home tour goers, for its rich history and authentic charm, is our study. This space beautifully exemplifies our commitment to historical preservation. During the renovation, we made an exciting discovery: behind layers of drywall, we uncovered the home’s original shiplap wood. Preserving this tangible piece of history became a cornerstone of the room’s design, with some of the reclaimed wood now serving as a stunning accent wall, adding warmth and character that harks back to the home’s early days. Complementing this, the study still boasts the original windows from 1912, which remarkably operate with their traditional rope-and-pulley system, offering a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century craftsmanship and providing an unparalleled sense of connection to the past. Curb appeal is incredibly important, so we’re paying close attention to the exterior’s presentation, making sure it’s as welcoming as possible. Inside, we’re adding those crucial last-minute touches, such as hanging a few recently acquired pieces of art or carefully arranging decorative elements to create a cohesive and welcoming atmosphere. We shared a very clear and cohesive vision: to create a home that respectfully integrated its inherent historic elements with a decidedly updated and modern twist. This involved a careful selection of finishes, fixtures, and furnishings that bridge the gap between classic charm and contemporary living, creating a unique dialogue between eras. Beyond the structural and stylistic choices, our home also tells the story of our lives. We are passionate about traveling and have had the wonderful opportunity to collect unique items from our adventures around the globe. These cherished pieces – from intricate textiles and fascinating art to decorative objects and unique souvenirs – have been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the home, adding layers of personality, global flair, and personal narrative. We’ve been told, and have come to believe through various anecdotal accounts and local records, that our home stands as a former farmhouse, dating all the way back to 1912. What makes this particularly interesting is its connection to a dairy farm that once thrived in what is now the bustling Lakewood neighborhood. The original homeowner, we understand, was indeed a dairy farmer, and our property was an integral part of that working farm. Imagining this area as sprawling farmland, providing dairy to the burgeoning city of Dallas, really gives you a sense of its incredible transformation over the decades. It’s a wonderful piece of local history to carry, and it certainly adds a unique layer of charm and narrative to our home, reminding us of the rich agricultural past that predates the vibrant residential community we know today.
