The award-winning project centered on a property nestled in Lake Highlands, a Dallas neighborhood known for its charming homes. The clients had acquired the home several years prior and had been meticulously updating it with authentic midcentury design elements. However, the primary bathroom presented a significant challenge, demanding a far more extensive and thoughtful overhaul to align with the home’s revitalized aesthetic and the owners’ contemporary lifestyle. The homeowners’ comprehensive wish list for their dream bathroom was ambitious, including a desire to significantly expand the shower’s footprint, intelligently reconfigure the entire toilet area for enhanced privacy and flow, completely eliminate the underutilized tub, and upgrade to an energy-efficient tankless water heater, among other improvements. This project was not merely a cosmetic update but a complete reimagining of the space.

“The spatial layout was critically important in this project, and it was the very first aspect addressed during our initial design consultation,” explained Rebecca Sutton, Residential Designer at Kitchen Design Concepts. Understanding the existing challenges and the client’s vision for a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space was paramount. Sutton’s expertise in spatial planning and innovative design solutions proved invaluable from the outset, setting the stage for a truly remarkable transformation.

“Previously, the bathroom suffered from narrow, awkward walk paths, an unappealing and unused tub inexplicably placed on carpet, a commode with absolutely zero privacy, and a closet that lacked a door, contributing to a cluttered and disjointed feel.”

“Our design strategy involved dramatically increasing usable square footage by intelligently eliminating an existing hall closet that opened into the bathroom. We then completely reconfigured the entire space by ‘flipping’ the layout of the vanities and integrated cabinet storage, thereby optimizing flow and accessibility. The shower was doubled in size, transforming it into a spacious and inviting walk-in experience. With the removal of the bulky tub, we were able to strategically relocate the commode to an adjacent wall, further enhancing its privacy with the addition of a stylish frosted glass partition, creating a more secluded and comfortable area away from the main bathroom entry,” Sutton elaborated. This meticulous planning not only solved the previous functional issues but also imbued the bathroom with a sense of openness and refined luxury, making every element feel intentionally placed.

The design elements chosen for the Lake Highlands bathroom were carefully curated to perfectly harmonize with the home’s overarching midcentury modern aesthetic. Key features included elegant floating wood-toned shaker cabinetry, which contributed to a clean, uncluttered look while offering ample storage. A vibrant pop of bright blue accent tile was strategically incorporated, providing a playful yet sophisticated nod to the era’s characteristic use of color and geometric patterns. Beyond its MCM roots, the design also thoughtfully integrated touches of refined Scandinavian design principles. This influence is clearly seen in the emphasis on clean lines, an abundance of natural light to create an airy atmosphere, and innovative, practical storage solutions that enhance both functionality and visual appeal. The result is a bathroom that is both deeply rooted in its midcentury inspiration and thoroughly contemporary in its execution and comfort.

Tracy Wright, Senior Director of Member Engagement and Governance at NARI, commended the caliber of this year’s submissions, highlighting the competitive nature of the awards. “This year’s submissions were truly outstanding, making the job of our esteemed judges exceptionally difficult,” Wright noted. She further elaborated on the rigorous evaluation process: “The judging panel, composed of highly respected industry experts, carefully selected winners based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including demonstrated problem-solving, superior functionality, aesthetic appeal, masterful craftsmanship, innovation, and the inherent degree of difficulty presented by the project.” Kitchen Design Concepts’ Lake Highlands renovation unequivocally excelled in every one of these challenging categories, solidifying its status as a benchmark for excellence in residential remodeling.

Elevate Your Space: 5 Essential Ways to Incorporate Iconic Midcentury Modern (MCM) Style into Your Bathroom Design

Midcentury Modern design continues to captivate homeowners with its timeless appeal, clean lines, and sophisticated simplicity. If you’re looking to infuse your bathroom with the distinctive charm and enduring elegance of MCM, here are five key elements you can embrace:

1. Statement-Making Wallpaper. One of the most impactful ways to introduce MCM flair is through bold wallpaper. From optically illusive geometrics and atomic patterns to colorful, groovy curves and organic motifs, there’s an endless array of covet-worthy wall covering designs that defined the era. Opt for patterns in muted earth tones mixed with vibrant accent colors like teal, mustard, or burnt orange. Consider wallpapering a single accent wall, the ceiling, or even the back of a recessed shelf to create an unexpected focal point that truly pops. This design choice instantly adds personality and a distinct retro-chic vibe.

2. Retro Lighting. Lighting fixtures are more than just functional; they are sculptural elements that can significantly enhance your MCM bathroom. Top picks include sleek modern pendants with clean lines, retro-style sconces often featuring conical or globe shapes, and the iconic Sputnik chandeliers, which embody a futuristic yet vintage aesthetic. Newer versions of 1950s and 60s designs expertly combine authentic period style with contemporary functionality, incorporating forward-thinking features like energy-efficient LED bulbs and integrated dimmers for customizable ambiance. Look for materials such as polished brass, chrome, or matte black finishes to capture the true essence of midcentury illumination.

3. Creative Tile. Tile selection is crucial in an MCM bathroom, offering a playground for texture and pattern. Geometric patterns, classic terrazzo, and crisp subway tiles are enduring MCM mainstays. Don’t be afraid to experiment beyond the obvious; consider using different tile types or sizes for your walls versus the floor to create visual interest and a more dynamic, modern space. Think about penny tiles for a shower floor, hexagonal tiles for an accent wall, or a mosaic of different colored square tiles to mimic a pixelated effect. Bold, graphic patterns in a limited color palette also speak volumes about the era’s design philosophy.

4. Natural Wood Vanities. The warmth and organic beauty of natural wood are cornerstones of midcentury design. For your bathroom vanity, opt for styles that embody MCM principles: floating vanities or those supported by thin, tapered legs are iconic design staples. These choices not only offer a clean, minimalist aesthetic but also create the illusion of more floor space, making the bathroom feel larger and airier. Look for wood species like walnut, teak, or oak, known for their rich grain and durability. Prioritize clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and integrated storage solutions to maintain that quintessential uncluttered MCM look. The simplicity of these vanities allows the natural material to truly shine.

5. MCM-Inspired Accents. Finishing touches are vital for cementing your midcentury modern aesthetic. Mirrors can be more than reflective surfaces; asymmetrical shapes or geometric frames instantly break up otherwise simple lines, adding an artistic touch. Incorporate green plants, such as a snake plant or a monstera, to provide an airy, indoor-outdoor feel, a nod to MCM’s connection with nature. Finally, complete the look with fun, funky linens featuring geometric patterns, abstract prints, or bold, contrasting colors that echo the energetic spirit of the era. Consider sculptural decor pieces, vintage-inspired artwork, or even a sleek ceramic vase to tie the entire design together beautifully. By thoughtfully integrating these elements, you can create a bathroom that is both a tribute to a classic design period and a functional, inviting space for today.
