Dallas Real Estate Professionals and Center For Hope Staff - Community Service
Real Estate Community & Friends with Staff from Center For Hope

“There’s nothing more pleasurable than giving.” This profound statement, shared by Chef Daren Mitchell, Assistant Chef at Union Gospel Mission, truly encapsulates the spirit of an extraordinary day I recently experienced. Amidst the quiet calm before lunch service, preparing meals for 62 women and 46 children at the Center of Hope, Chef D’s words resonated deeply. While he spoke of his dedicated work, his sentiment perfectly summarized an incredible community service effort by a group of compassionate Dallas real estate professionals, wholeheartedly giving back to their community.

For this week’s Upon Closer Inspection, it felt fitting to dive deeper into the invaluable work being done by the staff at Center of Hope. We’ll explore the comprehensive services they provide, the resilient individuals they serve, and their pressing needs, particularly during this time of year when support is most crucial. This initiative highlights how the Dallas real estate community extends its expertise and generosity beyond property transactions, focusing on creating stronger, more stable foundations for those facing housing insecurity.

The Dallas Real Estate Community: Serving Up Hope

To celebrate his birthday in a truly meaningful way, Clayton Bailey, the benevolent Owner of Green Scene Home Inspections, rallied his extensive network of real estate colleagues. His mission? To prepare and serve a magnificent Texas BBQ feast for the residents of Center of Hope. This wasn’t just a meal; it was an act of profound kindness and solidarity, bringing together individuals who are pillars in the Dallas Fort Worth real estate sector.

Among the dedicated volunteers was RedBranch Realty Owner, Ashley Gentry, a natural leader whose infectious smile conveys a warm “Welcome Home” to everyone she meets. Her culinary contribution, a special recipe for bacon mac and cheese, was an instant hit. Nikki Giovanni Watson from The Design Quad, known for her enormous talent and even larger heart, arrived with her world-famous potato salad, adding another layer of comfort to the meal. Arlene Antis, Owner of ONYX Real Estate Group, exemplified a true servant’s heart, always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. And then there’s Eric Holmes of Compass Real Estate, a dynamic individual who consistently exceeds expectations in every project he undertakes. His award-winning Texas chili is legendary, and if you haven’t had the pleasure of tasting it, you’re truly missing out.

And let’s not forget the star of the show – a generous 50 pounds of brisket, masterfully smoked by Clayton Bailey himself. This incredible team, supported by their families and friends, collectively served warm, delicious meals filled with love, straight from the heart of the Dallas Fort Worth real estate community. This event showcased not only their culinary skills but also their deep commitment to social responsibility and supporting those in critical need within their own backyard.

“There is always, always, always something to be thankful for.” – The Ecosystem of Empowerment at Center of Hope Dallas

This powerful affirmation, along with numerous other uplifting and spiritual quotes, is beautifully painted across the walls of the Center of Hope. Our serving team was privileged to take a guided tour of the facility with Director Patrice Denning, and these words resonated deeply as we navigated the deceptively spacious 40,000 square-foot building. It’s an environment meticulously designed to foster gratitude, resilience, and personal growth for every woman and child who walks through its doors.

Beyond surprisingly cozy and charming residential quarters, thoughtfully separated for women with children and those without, the Center of Hope offers expansive common areas for working, relaxing, and recreation. However, what truly sets this facility apart is its comprehensive suite of resources, meticulously crafted to support women on their individual journeys toward self-sufficiency and stability. The Career Development Center, for instance, boasts a fully equipped computer lab that provides essential tools like virtual resume workshops. Dedicated staff members offer invaluable assistance in navigating complex systems, from collecting Social Security or disability benefits to managing online applications for employment or housing. Coupled with spiritual and emotional guidance and counseling, these resources form a holistic support system designed to address every facet of a resident’s life.

The commitment of Center of Hope extends beyond on-site resources. They provide crucial transportation services to job fairs, ensuring women have every opportunity to secure employment. For children, transportation to and from school is arranged, removing a significant barrier to education. On-site daycare facilities allow mothers to confidently seek and maintain employment, knowing their children are safe and cared for. The facility also features a boutique stocked with gently used or new women’s and children’s clothing and shoes, offering dignity and practical support. Furthermore, an exciting renovation is underway to establish an on-site salon. This innovative project will not only provide much-needed beauty services to residents but also partner with local beauty schools to offer vocational training, creating pathways to potential careers. Similarly, the on-site clinic provides residents with immediate access to medical care and offers opportunities for training in healthcare-related fields, embodying their mission of empowerment through practical skills and well-being.

“What impresses me so much about this place is that it’s really an ecosystem for homeless women and children. They nurture women through this program with tools like budgeting and job skills; it’s a whole process that’s setting them up for success, not just providing a bed for the night.”

How Can You Support Homeless Shelters in Dallas? Every Act of Kindness Counts.

When asked about how the community can help, Bruce Butler, CEO of Union Gospel Mission, gave a resounding answer: “Everything you can!” This powerful sentiment underscores the diverse and ongoing needs of an organization that serves hundreds daily. Union Gospel Mission operates two vital shelters: the Center of Hope for women and children, and the Calvert Place Men’s Shelter, which provides refuge for over 300 individuals each day. In addition, they manage two apartment complexes, offering crucial transitional housing that bridges the gap from homelessness to permanent stability.

These facilities, much like any home, require constant upkeep, maintenance, and strategic improvements. This creates a significant need for both financial contributions and hands-on volunteer support in Dallas. While volunteers are needed across all skill sets, those with expertise in the real estate and housing industry can provide particularly invaluable assistance. Bruce Butler specifically highlighted several pressing needs: installing double-paned windows in the 100-plus-year-old building on Cass Street to drastically improve energy efficiency, replacing the roof on the same historic building, and updating apartments in Carrollton and East Dallas to ensure safe and comfortable transitional housing. These types of projects not only enhance the living environment for residents but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of these essential shelters.

Butler also shared his visionary dream of transforming both shelters into cutting-edge green buildings. This ambitious plan includes upgrading to energy-saving appliances, enhancing insulation, and installing solar panels and other sustainable technologies. This vision presents exciting opportunities for future service projects, particularly given the new tax benefits available for green energy purchases for businesses and individuals under the Inflation Reduction Act. Imagine the profound impact a skilled team or generous donor could make by helping a homeless shelter embrace these eco-friendly upgrades, resulting in lower operating costs and a healthier environment for residents. It’s a compelling call to action for anyone looking to combine community service with environmental stewardship, offering a unique chance to give back in a way that truly benefits everyone involved and contributes to sustainable living in Dallas.

“Something we take for granted can be a blessing for someone else.” – The Power of Donations

Chef D’s insightful words truly hit home when I asked him what message he most wanted people to understand about the Center of Hope’s mission. Many items we consider everyday necessities can be profound blessings for someone rebuilding their life. Your generosity, whether through physical donations or financial contributions, can make an immense difference to those experiencing homelessness in Dallas.

Particularly during colder months, there’s a significant demand for gently used or new winter weather items, ensuring residents stay warm and safe. New undergarments, toiletries, and cleaning supplies are also consistently urgent needs. These items, often overlooked, contribute directly to the dignity, hygiene, and overall well-being of the women and children at the shelter. You can view a comprehensive list of their urgent needs and requests directly on the Union Gospel Mission website here. For an incredibly convenient way to give, explore the Center of Hope’s Amazon Wish List, where you can directly purchase and ship needed items.

Beyond tangible goods, monetary donations provide flexible and critical support. Consider giving a meaningful holiday gift in a loved one’s name. A donation of just $100 can provide vital mental health counseling for one person, offering crucial emotional support on their journey to recovery. Even $54 can provide a full day of shelter, nutritious meals, and compassionate care for one individual, offering immediate relief and a foundation for future stability. Every dollar directly impacts lives, helping Union Gospel Mission sustain its comprehensive services and empower individuals to overcome the challenges of homelessness.

“We don’t just serve them physically, but mentally and emotionally. I wouldn’t call it a “job.” The Lord has blessed me to be able to serve so many who need it. To be able to serve them 365 days a year? Every day is a day of Thanksgiving.”

Executive Chef, Union Gospel Mission, Duane Ragas

This time of year naturally prompts many to reflect on giving back to those less fortunate. Yet, in many ways, these acts of service offer as much, if not more, to those who give as they do to those who receive. I know that all of us who were present at the Center of Hope were profoundly inspired and moved by the resilient individuals we met. The dedicated staff works tirelessly every single day, providing not just food and shelter, but also love, dignity, and crucial choices to people who have found themselves without any. It was a true blessing to meet these women and children, share some time with them, and witness the incredible impact of compassionate service firsthand.

So, this week, as we conclude our Upon Closer Inspection, our advice to homeowners, potential home buyers, and every member of the Dallas Fort Worth community is simple: reflect on what you might have to offer to those without homes this holiday season and beyond. Whether it’s your time, skills, or resources, please consider reaching out to the wonderful people at Union Gospel Mission Center of Hope. A simple click or a call can ignite a chain of kindness and make a tangible difference in someone’s life. Let’s continue to build a stronger, more compassionate community for everyone in Dallas.
