GlobeAware Dallas: Pioneering Life-Changing Voluntourism Experiences

The legacy of conflict often casts a long, dark shadow over generations, and few relics of war are as insidious and enduring as landmines. These explosive remnants, often no larger than a child’s toy and sometimes even brightly colored, pose an indiscriminate threat, particularly in regions like Southeast Asia. Decades of devastating conflicts, notably the Vietnam War, left behind a landscape riddled with these hidden dangers in countries such as Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The tragic consequence is a heartbreaking reality where countless children, innocent victims of a war long past, now live as amputees, their futures irrevocably altered.

For Kimberly Haley-Coleman, the founder of the impactful non-profit GlobeAware, the devastating human cost of these hidden weapons became profoundly personal. A vivid memory, etched deeply into her mind, is of witnessing an injured child receive a much-needed wheelchair. It was a moment that transcended the simple act of charity, revealing a deeper truth about human need and parental love.

“What truly stands out in my memory isn’t just the child’s reaction, but the profound looks of relief and gratitude on their parents’ faces,” Haley-Coleman recalls. As a mother of two, she understood the immense privilege her own children had always enjoyed, never wanting for basic necessities. To witness the sheer happiness of parents receiving something so critically essential for their child’s mobility and dignity was an experience that moved her deeply. “It affected me profoundly, both physically and emotionally, cementing a resolve to make a tangible difference.”

This powerful encounter embodies the driving force behind GlobeAware, the Dallas-based non-profit Haley-Coleman established an impressive 23 years ago. Under her steadfast leadership as CEO, GlobeAware has spearheaded over 3,500 wheelchair assemblies and distributions, directly transforming lives in underserved communities worldwide. However, facilitating vital wheelchair access is just one facet of the many hands-on, short-term volunteer travel projects meticulously managed by this dedicated organization.

Embarking on Purposeful Journeys: Global Volunteer Travel with Impact

Kimberly Haley-Coleman’s vision for GlobeAware was to seamlessly integrate enriching international travel with meaningful humanitarian service. Growing up with significant privilege, a second-generation graduate of Hockaday and now raising a third, she had the opportunity to travel extensively from a young age, experiencing diverse cultures firsthand. Despite earning a Master’s degree in Art History and an MBA in International Business, a deep-seated restlessness persisted. She sought a way to channel her experiences and education into something that would create lasting positive change beyond the conventional career path.

This personal quest led her to combine her passion for global exploration with an inherent desire to help others. She realized she could “do good while experiencing the world” in a more profound and impactful way than traditional tourism offered. Her journey into humanitarian travel began with exploratory visits, such as her trip to Ayutthaya, Thailand. There, she engaged directly with local monks and community leaders, meticulously cataloging their most pressing needs and aspirations. The project list grew, encompassing everything from installing crucial chalkboards in schools and adding much-needed bathroom doors to repairing dilapidated pedestrian bridges – projects that, on the surface, seemed entirely feasible.

Yet, the reality on the ground presented formidable challenges, largely cultural and logistical. “Is it brain surgery? No,” she muses. “Is it challenging? Yes, very much so.” Simple tasks like ordering tools and supplies, typically straightforward in the U.S., became incredibly complex in a foreign setting. Add to this the intricacies of monetary conversions, significant language barriers, and navigating unfamiliar bureaucratic systems, and Haley-Coleman quickly recognized a critical gap: the urgent need for a dedicated entity to arrange and manage these complex logistics for international volunteers.

“So, I began organizing these trips on the side, initially as a passion project,” she explains. “When I started inviting friends and acquaintances to join me, they enthusiastically accepted.” From these organic beginnings, the concept of GlobeAware truly came to life.

The initial volunteer opportunities quickly expanded to include destinations like Peru and Costa Rica, soon followed by vital projects across Asia. The selection of locations for GlobeAware’s service trips is a carefully considered process, factoring in numerous variables such as volunteer safety, political stability, and, most importantly, the genuine and demonstrable need within the host community. Projects are specifically designed to be achievable within a relatively short timeframe, making them ideal for students on break, families seeking meaningful vacations, or corporate teams looking for unique team-building experiences. A key element of the GlobeAware ethos is the deliberate departure from typical American comforts. Volunteers are encouraged to embrace a simpler lifestyle, where electronic devices, fast food, and creature comforts are not part of the promise, but rather an opportunity for deeper immersion and personal growth.

“For young people growing up in privileged environments, perhaps attending private schools in Dallas, these experiences are profoundly transformative,” Haley-Coleman emphasizes. “They fundamentally shift your perspective on the world and your place within it.”

A Transformative Family Adventure: Deb Young’s GlobeAware Experience

Dallas resident Deb Young perfectly exemplifies the profound difference that this unique mode of travel can make. After her son Toby graduated from St. Mark’s School of Texas in 2022, the mother-son duo embarked on a two-week adventure to Thailand. While one week was spent on independent exploration, the other was dedicated to a meticulously organized GlobeAware volunteer program, offering a striking contrast and a deeply enriching experience.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to travel quite extensively over the years,” Young shares. However, Toby, like many young adults, had expressed little interest in simply touring another museum. “The GlobeAware program was absolutely perfect for us. We were actively looking for a meaningful way to re-engage with travel after the challenges of recent years, and the concept of combining genuine service with our exploration was incredibly appealing.”

Their week with GlobeAware in Thailand was a kaleidoscope of authentic cultural and service experiences. It included enlightening conversations with revered monks inside ancient temples, heartwarming interactions with children from the country’s diverse hill tribes, an adventurous visit to a vibrant floating market, and, critically, opportunities to practice English with schoolchildren in Chiang Dao. These language exchange sessions were more than just lessons; they were genuine connections, fostering confidence and providing invaluable communication skills to the local youth.

“The overarching focus of these projects is truly on empowering these children with practical skills that can help them build a better life,” Young explains. “A significant part of our time was dedicated to direct, meaningful interaction with the local people, fostering understanding and connection.”

The undisputed highlight of their journey, she recounts, was a deeply moving visit to an elephant sanctuary. There, she and Toby had the extraordinary opportunity to feed, gently pet, and even assist in washing these majestic creatures in a river, an experience that resonated deeply with their love for nature and wildlife.

“They are simply the biggest, most inherently lovely animals,” she says with a sense of awe. “The elephants at the sanctuary appeared incredibly content, peaceful, and truly majestic. For me, being outdoors and immersed in nature is profoundly important for my mental health, so this experience was an absolute treat, a true moment of serenity.”

Young found GlobeAware’s meticulous preparation to be invaluable, ensuring a seamless and enriching journey. All travel logistics were expertly handled, accommodations were comfortable and thoughtfully selected, and comprehensive packing instructions were provided well in advance. For example, she knew to cover her arms for temple visits and to prepare for getting wet when engaging with the elephants. This thorough planning contributed significantly to the trip’s overall success and enjoyment.

“It genuinely makes a world of difference when you’re traveling to a place so vastly different from home,” Young observes. “Having those structured opportunities to speak with and connect with the local people was incredibly beneficial. I felt so much more deeply connected to the culture and the individuals we met, far beyond what traditional tourism might offer.”

Making a Global Difference: GlobeAware’s Expansive Reach and Diverse Projects

GlobeAware’s commitment to facilitating meaningful volunteer experiences spans an impressive array of countries, offering unparalleled opportunities to engage with diverse cultures and pressing humanitarian needs. Their international volunteer projects extend across Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Laos, Machu Picchu (Peru), Malawi, Mexico, Nepal, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Romania, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. This extensive reach ensures that volunteers can find a project that aligns with their interests and desired impact.

Past projects have showcased the breadth of GlobeAware’s mission, going beyond the all-important wheelchair assemblies to include critical initiatives like installing durable flooring in homes and community centers, contributing to vital sea turtle protection efforts along coastlines, and fitting energy-efficient adobe stoves in rural communities. Each project is carefully selected to address specific, identified community needs, ensuring that volunteer efforts translate into sustainable and tangible benefits.

Haley-Coleman emphatically stresses that volunteer travelers do not need to be bilingual, nor do they require highly specialized skills to participate and make a difference. The core of the GlobeAware experience is about human connection and willingness to contribute. “We want people to work side by side with local community members, truly working as equals, making a real, tangible difference,” she asserts. “That collaborative spirit is our true hope and the essence of our mission.” While specialized skills are not a prerequisite, volunteers with particular expertise are welcome to inform GlobeAware, as the organization can often match them to sites where those skills could be uniquely maximized for even greater impact.

The transformative nature of these volunteer vacations is evident in the high number of individuals who return year after year, dedicating their vacation time to service. GlobeAware trips typically run from Sunday through Saturday, offering a comprehensive and immersive week-long experience. The cost, averaging between $1,200 and $1,400 per person depending on the specific program, is meticulously designed to cover all essential in-country expenses, including accommodations, meals, project materials, and local transportation. Students are also offered a generous discount of approximately 10 percent, making these life-changing opportunities more accessible. Significantly, the cost of participation is tax-deductible, providing an added benefit for those seeking to contribute to global humanitarian efforts. The only personal expenses not covered typically include souvenirs, alcoholic beverages, or luxury upgrades, encouraging a focus on the core mission of service and cultural immersion.

Beyond Monetary Value: The True Return on Investment in Humanitarian Travel

The return on investment for participating in a GlobeAware trip extends far beyond the monetary. It’s an investment in personal growth, global understanding, and an unparalleled perspective shift that lasts a lifetime. “To immerse yourself in these countries, to work alongside their people, helps you truly realize and appreciate what you have in your own life,” Haley-Coleman explains. “It’s an incredibly quick and powerful way to gain a deeply profound set of perspectives that you simply cannot acquire through traditional tourism.”

Deb Young’s experience stands as a testament to this enduring value. So compelling was her first journey with GlobeAware that she plans to embark on another service trip when her younger son, Alex, graduates from high school, demonstrating a commitment to passing on this transformative experience to her entire family.

“I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to go again with GlobeAware,” Young affirms with conviction. “The experience is truly compelling, and its impact stays with you long after you return home.”

Kimberly Haley-Coleman firmly believes that the experience of international volunteer travel is an opportunity not to be missed, a vital component of a well-lived life. “It’s one of those essential life experiences that every person on this earth is cheating themselves out of, an experience they will ultimately regret missing, if they don’t take a few days to truly appreciate and engage with a culture utterly different from their own,” she states passionately. “I genuinely love what we do here at GlobeAware, because we are facilitating these profound connections and creating lasting positive change, one volunteer, one project, one community at a time.”
