Ellen Terry Honored at Her Retirement Celebration

Ellen Terry: Celebrating the Remarkable Legacy of a Dallas Real Estate Icon

On a memorable Thursday, May 26th, at the esteemed Dallas Country Club, the entire Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty team gathered to honor and celebrate the retirement of one of Dallas real estate’s true legends, Ellen Terry. The event served as a heartfelt tribute to a career spanning more than four decades, marked by unparalleled success, groundbreaking innovation, and a profound impact on countless lives within the industry.

Ellen Terry is unequivocally one of the grand dames of Dallas real estate, a pioneering force whose influence reshaped the luxury market in North Texas. Throughout her illustrious career, she has closed an astonishing more than $1 billion in real estate transactions, a testament to her unwavering dedication and exceptional skill. Her portfolio includes some of Dallas’s most iconic and highest-priced residences, solidifying her reputation as the go-to expert for discerning clients. Terry’s visionary approach led her to pioneer the concept of a luxury boutique real estate brokerage at a time when most agents were still relying on cumbersome, physical listing books. She built her own distinguished firm, which was subsequently acquired by the legendary Ebby Halliday in 1995, further cementing her status in the industry. Her journey continued in 2011 when she joined Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty, where she seamlessly transitioned into the pivotal role of Executive Vice President of Coaching and Mentoring, sharing her vast knowledge with a new generation of professionals.

Robbie Briggs, President and CEO of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty, expressed profound admiration for Terry’s contributions. “It is a tremendous honor that Ellen ultimately called our brokerage her home, and that it will continue to be home for the Terry Team,” Briggs stated. “I count myself among the many team members who have benefited immensely from her generosity, passion, and profound knowledge.” His words underscored the deep respect and affection Ellen commanded within the organization she helped elevate.

The Heart of a Mentor: Shaping Generations of Real Estate Leaders

Ellen Terry’s most enduring legacy might well be her extraordinary gift for motivating and uplifting the agents she trained. Her ability to inspire was legendary, shaping many of today’s most successful real estate professionals. Early in her career, recognizing the importance of holistic development, she would host immersive three-day retreats in scenic Kerrville, Texas. These weren’t just business meetings; they were transformative experiences. Days began with invigorating early morning hikes, followed by sessions where agents engaged with motivational speakers. The curriculum focused on critical life and career skills: cultivating self-confidence, fostering perseverance in a competitive market, and understanding the paramount importance of maintaining a positive attitude. This forward-thinking approach to agent development was revolutionary, distinguishing her firm and its agents in a crowded marketplace. She understood that success in real estate wasn’t just about closing deals, but about nurturing the personal growth and mindset of each individual.

Her son, Todd Terry, who proudly carries on her vision as Senior Vice President leading the Terry Team, elaborated on her pioneering spirit. “She was really a pioneer in developing a luxury real estate brand and in understanding that part of that means investing in yourself and in your agents,” Todd explained. “All of it stems from her true belief that attitude is everything and a desire to help those around her to be all they could be.” This philosophy became the bedrock of her mentorship, empowering countless individuals to achieve their fullest potential.

A Legacy Forged Through Resilience and Determination

Ellen Terry’s path to unprecedented success was not without its challenges. Her very first sale, a $400,000 home on Lakeside Drive to Jan Cox in 1976, marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. However, the legend of Ellen Terry’s rise is deeply rooted in a story of remarkable resilience. When her family fortunes unexpectedly took a turn for the worse, she bravely bootstrapped her way to incredible success. As a single mother raising two children, Todd and Annie, her determination was fierce. Days after joining Coldwell Banker in 1976, her very first broker, she achieved over a million dollars in real estate sales, a staggering accomplishment that enabled her to pay off a substantial IRS bill in full. This early triumph underscored her innate ability to overcome adversity and excel under pressure.

Her market prowess continued to soar throughout the decades. In 2002, she made headlines by selling what was, at the time, the most expensive home in Dallas: the magnificent $22 million Dick and Jinger Heath mansion at 4707 Park Lane, meticulously designed by Cole Smith. Her client list read like a who’s who of Dallas society, including selling townhomes for Al Hill, Jr., and facilitating the sale of estates for many Highland Park notables. Beyond her prolific sales, Ellen also dedicated time to teaching PE at The Hockaday School, showcasing her diverse talents and commitment to education.

Philanthropy: Giving Back to the Community She Loved

Beyond her professional achievements, Ellen Terry has been an incredibly philanthropic force in Dallas, dedicating her time and resources to numerous charitable causes. She founded the prestigious Ellen Terry Realtors Ladies Golf Classic, an initiative that has raised more than $400,000 to benefit the Genesis Women’s Shelter, among other vital organizations. Her commitment to giving back to the community that supported her was a hallmark of her career, reflecting a deeply empathetic and generous spirit.

An Inspiring Force: Testimonials from Those She Elevated

The retirement celebration was a teary-eyed trip down memory lane, with many of Dallas’s most successful agents describing how Ellen Terry not only gave them their start but also provided crucial boosts throughout their careers. Her true gift, as many attest, was her unparalleled ability to teach and inspire, a focus she wholeheartedly embraced during her tenure at Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty.

Robbie Briggs, who began selling real estate at his father’s brokerage in 1978, recalled the contrasting approaches to the business. Ellen had started just two years prior, in 1976. “The agents sat in the offices and waited for the phones to ring,” Robbie reminisced. “Ellen, however, did not wait for the phones to ring.” He added with a smile, “I kept watching her, admiring her, and loving her!” This sentiment captures the essence of Ellen’s proactive, driven nature that set her apart from the very beginning.

Ellen’s unique personal branding also became a significant part of her legend. She was playfully teased about the reference to the movie, ET the Extra-Terrestrial, which premiered around the time Ellen was rapidly expanding her luxury boutique business. Far from being deterred, she liberally embraced the comparison, along with her diminutive 4′ 11″ stature, to her advantage. Her signature phone number, 528-3838, creatively translated to 528-ETET, becoming an instantly recognizable and memorable identifier in the Dallas market. Janice Wells perfectly encapsulated this aspect of Ellen’s persona: “Our leader was tiny, but oh so mighty.”

Becky Frey shared her own transformative experience. She started her career in retail, fresh out of SMU, but her trajectory changed forever after she was introduced to Ellen Terry. “That’s when I traded my ability to send clients home with bags of clothing to selling dirt,” Becky quipped, highlighting the profound shift. Under Ellen’s tutelage, Becky learned invaluable lessons. “I learned that in order to make your goals, you had to set them,” she affirmed. “I learned everything I know today from Ellen, including to wear pantyhose.” This seemingly small detail underscores Ellen’s meticulous approach to professionalism and presentation within her luxury brokerage.

Indeed, Ellen ran a remarkably “tight ship” luxury brokerage, where exacting standards were the norm. Agents were expected to dress impeccably each day at the office, as if they were preparing to show a multi-million dollar home. This included a strict dress code that mandated pantyhose and scarves, fostering an image of sophisticated professionalism. Beyond outward appearance, Ellen cultivated a culture of unwavering positivity, encouraging 24/7 positive thinking with affirmations such as: “I’m happy, I’m healthy I get what I want.” This holistic approach to success, blending discipline with an optimistic mindset, was truly groundbreaking.

Dan Mahoney affirmed Ellen’s leadership: “Ellen was leading the way everything was going in the real estate business at the time.” This included her strategic and sometimes aggressive marketing tactics, like consistently buying larger newspaper advertisements for her listings than her competitors, ensuring her properties received maximum exposure and attention.

Kay Wood’s story is another powerful testament to Ellen’s influence. As a desperate young mother who suddenly found herself as her family’s primary breadwinner, Kay sought guidance. In a single lunch session, Ellen outlined a life plan for Kay, instilling in her the power of eternal positivity. To this day, whenever Kay encounters a negative thought, the word “cancel” immediately comes to mind, serving as a powerful mental command to “cancel all negative thoughts” – a practice directly inherited from Ellen’s teachings.

Penny Cook vividly recalled a moment that exemplified Ellen’s integrity and business acumen. Penny had tipped Ellen off to a significant property that was about to hit the market. Before it even reached the MLS, Ellen skillfully snagged the listing and successfully sold it. Later, when Penny was in genuine need, Ellen discreetly handed her a check. “She said, don’t ask any questions, but thank you for the tip,” a teary Penny recounted. “That,” Penny concluded, “is integrity.” Such acts of generosity and fairness were characteristic of Ellen’s approach to business and relationships.

A Family Legacy: Continuing the Vision

Todd Terry and his sister Annie affectionately describe their mother as “a ball of dynamite wrapped in the heart of a teddy bear.” Todd, who will continue to lead the acclaimed Terry Team, shared personal anecdotes reflecting her influence. “We used to call her ‘the mogul’,” he fondly recalled. He spoke of accompanying her on what she’d promise would be a “quick showing,” only for it to extend for two hours, a testament to her thoroughness and dedication. “She taught us to give 110% percent but always ask for 6 percent,” Todd said, highlighting her blend of hard work and savvy negotiation. Following in her footsteps, Todd studied for his real estate license at 17 and obtained it at 18, illustrating the deep impact of his mother’s career on his own path.

A humorous chapter in Ellen’s storied career involved a cease and desist letter from none other than film director Steven Spielberg. He requested Ellen to abandon her new slogans, “Phone ET for a home!” and similar references, due to their similarity to his blockbuster film. The irony was not lost on those in Dallas: “What in the world was Spielberg thinking? ET WAS Ellen Terry in Dallas!” The incident only added to her legendary status, showcasing her playful yet powerful brand presence.

Todd Terry’s concluding remarks beautifully summarized his mother’s impact: “Mom, you are a champion of champions. The Terry Team will continue the legacy. ET is everyone’s treasure!” These words resonate with the enduring admiration and respect Ellen Terry commands, not just as a real estate magnate, but as an irreplaceable mentor and beloved figure.
