Preservation Dallas Summer Sizzlers Kicks Off

Unveiling Dallas’s Rich History: The Preservation Dallas Summer Sizzlers Series

Prepare to embark on a captivating journey through Dallas’s past as the highly anticipated 2022 Preservation Dallas Summer Sizzlers series makes its grand return! Kicking off on July 14th at the historic Wilson Carriage House, this acclaimed lecture series promises an unparalleled blend of education, entertainment, and nostalgic insights into the city’s unique heritage. Whether you’re a long-time resident, a history enthusiast, or new to the vibrant culture of Dallas, the Summer Sizzlers offer a compelling reason to connect with the stories that shaped our community.

Preservation Dallas, a cornerstone of historical advocacy in the region, expertly curates this series by drawing upon the profound knowledge of local historians, dedicated preservationists, skilled restoration experts, insightful museum directors, and meticulous archaeologists. These esteemed professionals generously share their expertise and perspectives in a series of six engaging educational lectures, held every Thursday night for six consecutive weeks. Each session is designed to illuminate a different facet of Dallas’s rich tapestry, inviting attendees to discover hidden narratives and appreciate the enduring legacy of its past.

A Legacy of Learning: The Genesis of Summer Sizzlers

The Summer Sizzlers series, a beloved annual tradition, was first established in 2002 by former Preservation Dallas Director Dwayne Jones. His vision was clear: to create an accessible platform that would educate, inspire, and deeply engage both members and non-members on fascinating topics steeped in history. From the outset, the series aimed to infuse learning with an element of fun, intrigue, and, of course, a healthy dose of nostalgia, making historical exploration an enjoyable and memorable experience for all ages. Over two decades, it has grown into a cornerstone event, eagerly awaited by hundreds who seek to deepen their understanding of Dallas.

Exciting New Themes and Enduring Favorites for 2022

Jennifer Solomon, the Membership and Program Director for Preservation Dallas, expresses immense enthusiasm for this year’s lineup. “This year, we are thrilled to introduce several topics that haven’t been featured in our programming before,” she notes, highlighting a commitment to fresh perspectives and unexplored historical avenues. The 2022 series promises to broaden horizons with subjects such as the intricate art of wet plate photography, the vital practices of art conservation, and the pivotal women’s suffrage movement specifically within Dallas. This dedication to uncovering new stories ensures that even long-time attendees will find something novel and stimulating.

Beyond these captivating new additions, the series will also revisit popular historical landmarks and events. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the various former headquarters of Dr Pepper, a beverage with deep roots in Texas. While many are familiar with the iconic Mockingbird plant, fewer are aware of the early bottling plant and headquarters situated on the fringes of Deep Ellum – a building now proudly recognized as a Dallas Landmark. This lecture offers a fascinating look into the industrial heritage of the city.

Due to overwhelming demand, former director David Preziosi will return for an encore presentation of his highly popular lecture on historic dining establishments in Dallas, a topic that captivated audiences at the Legacies Conference earlier this past January. This session provides a delightful culinary journey through the city’s past, exploring the eateries that once defined Dallas’s social and gastronomic landscape. Furthermore, inspired by the significant interest shown during last Fall’s “Cemeteries of Dallas” tour, a special session will delve into the rich symbolism found within historic cemeteries and reveal the hidden stories that can be uncovered when one learns what to look for, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and genealogy. Each of these enriching lectures will unfold within the comfortable and historically resonant walls of the Wilson Carriage House, providing a welcome respite from the summer heat.
