In June 2021, a new, deeply personal chapter unfolded for Ronnie Mosley when he was called to Ukraine to photograph for Serving Orphans Worldwide. It was there that he first encountered Dasha Shastun, then a highly intelligent 22-year-old Ukrainian woman, who served as his interpreter. This meeting would prove to be far more than a professional collaboration; it was the beginning of a profound connection that would intertwine their lives in unforeseen ways.
“Back then, the name Mariupol meant little to the outside world, but now, the entire globe recoils at the mention of it, having witnessed this vibrant city transformed into an absolute hell on earth,” Mosley solemnly noted. “When I first met Dasha, even before the widespread conflict, I had an immediate sense that God had a special, significant plan for her life. She possessed an extraordinary quality, a unique spark that set her apart.” His intuition proved to be remarkably prescient.
Armed with a master’s degree from Lviv University and fluent in an impressive four languages, Shastun quickly became an indispensable asset to Capturing Grace. Her diverse talents allowed her to serve as a true “jack of all trades,” effortlessly managing complex travel arrangements, expertly handling social media outreach, and conducting insightful interviews for various charitable nonprofits. Her intellectual prowess and compassionate spirit made her a perfect fit for the organization’s mission.

“It becomes incredibly personal when you intimately know the people who are suffering there,” Mosley confided. “Mariupol was Dasha’s home city, the place where she grew up and where her family still resides. Dasha is one of those remarkable individuals who possesses an inherent drive to care for her people, to serve and protect. When I first met her there, a seasoned traveler and an older man, she simply reached out her hand and offered, ‘Let me help you.’ In that simple, selfless gesture, I felt an almost supernatural connection to my daughter, Christina. I can’t fully explain how this sweet, compassionate young woman bridged that emotional gap, but she did.” This serendipitous connection brought solace and renewed purpose to Ronnie, affirming the profound links that can form between individuals united by a shared sense of humanity.
The burgeoning partnership between Mosley and Shastun led them to travel together to Romania and Croatia earlier this year, continuing Capturing Grace’s mission. As a planned trip to Africa loomed, Mosley, with a growing sense of foreboding, urged his young friend to make concrete plans to leave Ukraine, sensing the escalating danger. “This could become very bad,” he cautioned her, reflecting the grim reality that was about to unfold.

“When we landed in Uganda, Dasha’s phone immediately began to overload with a barrage of messages,” Mosley recalled vividly. “Her contacts were frantically asking if she was safe, if she was free. The chilling words echoed through the messages: ‘The war has broken out.’ Our lives, and certainly Dasha’s, changed dramatically in that instant. Yet, despite the unimaginable turmoil, Dasha, with incredible resilience, continued to carry out the work we had traveled there to do. She bravely interviewed people in their humble huts, her dedication unshaken even as her homeland crumbled.”
Now safely in Fort Worth with the Mosleys, Shastun has faced immense challenges in maintaining contact with her parents back in Ukraine. “They eventually managed to escape from their basement after three harrowing weeks, enduring conditions without electricity, without water, and without gas, all while battling terrible temperatures. There was a terrifying four-day period when Dasha lost all contact with them, and she feared the worst, believing they had perished.”
Each day, Dasha faithfully sends written prayers to her family, a tangible expression of her enduring hope and love across continents.
“It has been incredibly moving to witness God working on their hearts, both through Dasha’s steadfast faith and through this entire agonizing process,” he shared. “Her parents are still in Ukraine, although they have since relocated to a slightly safer area, where the intensity of the fighting is not as severe as in Mariupol. However, their future remains profoundly uncertain. Until that clarity emerges, it’s understandable that Dasha finds it difficult to fully envision or plan the rest of her own life.” The resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of such profound uncertainty, is a powerful testament to hope.
As someone who has recently witnessed the reality on the ground in Ukraine, Mosley acknowledges the impossibility of predicting future events. Nevertheless, he firmly believes in the extraordinary resiliency and courage of the Ukrainian people. “They have courageously fought for their freedom throughout their history,” he asserted. “As the world has now unequivocally seen, they are fierce, unwavering fighters. It’s incredibly difficult to foresee precisely how this complex situation will ultimately unfold, but their spirit remains unbroken.”

Ronnie Mosley grew up within the conservative traditions of a Southern Baptist church, where his father served as a minister, exposing him to Christianity and the Gospel from an early age. He recalls making a profession of faith at just six years old. In those darkest moments, it either solidifies the foundations of your faith, making it stronger than ever, or it has the potential to utterly break you apart.” For Ronnie, the experience, though agonizing, ultimately forged an unshakeable connection to his spiritual beliefs.

If an experience like that doesn’t fundamentally rock your world or irrevocably change your life, then truly nothing will. There are simply no words adequate enough to describe that particular kind of pain.” He reflected on his extensive career in real estate, having accumulated, bought, and sold well over 100 houses, and maintaining a portfolio of 123 rental properties. “Through all my work in real estate, I always believed that if I just worked a little harder, researched a little more diligently, I could solve or fix any problem,” he confessed. “But this… this was something I absolutely could not fix. That realization utterly devastated me.” It was in this profound helplessness that his worldly achievements paled in comparison to the spiritual awakening he experienced.
