Beyond the Bricks: Uncovering Your True Purpose in Work and Life

In our increasingly fast-paced professional lives, it’s remarkably easy to become consumed by the daily tasks and immediate deliverables of our jobs. We meticulously complete our duties, check items off our lists, and move on to the next challenge, often without taking a moment to reflect on the deeper significance of our efforts. Yet, true and sustainable fulfillment, both in our careers and personal lives, rarely comes from merely executing tasks. Instead, it stems from a profound connection to our individual purpose – our “why.” How do we transcend the routine “laying of bricks” to truly build a magnificent “cathedral” that resonates with our innermost motivations?

This quest for purpose was recently brought into sharp focus for me by my esteemed friend and long-time business associate, Dave Mashburn. He reminded me of an enduring parable, a story that many have likely encountered before, yet whose most profound and often overlooked lesson holds immense power for how we approach our work and our lives.

There were three bricklayers who were all working on the same job.

When they get a break, one guy asks the other two, ‘Why are you doing this job?’

The first guy says, ‘I’m doing it for the wages.’

The second guy says, ‘I’m doing it for my wife and kids.’

The third guy looks up at what they’ve been building — a church, a place to get in touch with God— and says, ‘I’m helping to build a cathedral.’

The Common Pitfall: Why We Often Misinterpret the Parable’s Wisdom

Upon first hearing this parable, an almost immediate and widespread reaction is to mentally crown the third bricklayer as the hero. His answer, “I’m helping to build a cathedral,” strikes a chord with our inherent desire for meaning, contribution, and a higher calling. It instinctively leads us to conclude that this perspective is the most enlightened, the most “right,” and that all work should ideally be approached with such a grand vision.

However, this conventional interpretation, while inspiring, frequently overshadows the parable’s more nuanced and truly transformative insight. The story isn’t designed to create a hierarchy of motivations or to label one purpose as inherently superior to others. To truly unlock its wisdom, we must resist the urge to judge or compare and instead recognize the intrinsic validity and power within each bricklayer’s individual drive. All three responses, when understood deeply, offer equally profound lessons about human motivation and the pursuit of meaning.

A Closer Look: The Diverse Faces of Purpose in Action

Let’s delve deeper into each bricklayer’s perspective, appreciating how their answers represent a fundamental and equally valid spectrum of human motivations and values:

1. The First Bricklayer: The Foundation of Financial Security

“I’m doing it for the wages.” At first glance, this might appear to be the most pragmatic, even prosaic, of answers. Yet, to dismiss it would be to ignore a fundamental truth of life and work. Wages are not merely currency; they are the essential bedrock of self-sufficiency, providing for basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. Beyond mere survival, wages facilitate financial stability, enable savings for the future, support education, allow for investments in personal growth, and provide the freedom to pursue passions and interests outside of work. For countless individuals, earning a reliable income is not just about sustaining life but about achieving independence, securing a better future for themselves, and maintaining a sense of dignity and control over their lives. This purpose is undeniably valid, deeply practical, and utterly foundational to well-being.

2. The Second Bricklayer: The Enduring Power of Family

“I’m doing it for my wife and kids.” This response immediately resonates with a powerful sense of love, responsibility, and unwavering dedication. The drive to provide for and protect one’s family is one of the most potent forces in human nature, inspiring individuals to work diligently, make significant sacrifices, and strive for stability. This bricklayer’s purpose extends far beyond his own immediate gain; his labor is a profound act of love, directly contributing to the well-being, education, and future opportunities of his loved ones. It’s a purpose rooted in connection, legacy, and the desire to create a more secure and joyful world for those he cherishes most. This motivation fuels millions globally, imbuing their work with profound meaning, regardless of the specific tasks involved.

3. The Third Bricklayer: The Vision of a Higher Calling

“I’m helping to build a cathedral.” This answer speaks to our innate human yearning for meaning, for contribution, and for being part of something significantly larger than ourselves. Building a cathedral symbolizes more than just a physical structure; it represents a monument of faith, a beacon for the community, a work of enduring art, and a legacy that will stand for generations. This bricklayer sees beyond the individual bricks and mortar; he envisions the sacred space, the spiritual refuge, and the masterpiece of human endeavor. His work transcends personal benefit, focusing instead on collective good, spiritual fulfillment, and a lasting positive impact on the world. This purpose taps into our desire for transcendence and our aspiration to contribute to a greater human story.

When we fully appreciate these expanded perspectives, a critical realization emerges: all three bricklayers possess a powerful, deeply personal sense of purpose. Crucially, no single purpose is inherently superior to another. The cathedral, in this illuminating parable, serves as a mere conduit through which their diverse individual purposes—be it financial stability, family well-being, or spiritual contribution—are brought to life. Each motivation is profoundly excellent; each represents a “right” answer when viewed through the lens of individual drive and aspiration.

The Real Lesson: It Isn’t About Loving the Bricks

If the parable isn’t about discerning the “best” answer, then what is its true, unspoken wisdom? The key lies in what was conspicuously absent from all three responses. Notice that not a single bricklayer declared, ‘I just love laying bricks.’

This subtle but powerful omission is the very heart of the parable’s profound insight. For the vast majority of us, the specific, repetitive tasks we perform daily—the proverbial “laying of bricks”—are not, in themselves, the ultimate source of our motivation or fulfillment. While some individuals may genuinely enjoy the tactile nature or intellectual challenge of their specific duties, for most, the true impetus stems from what the work enables. The act of laying bricks is primarily a means to an end, a mechanism through which we achieve our deeper aspirations: financial security, prosperity for our loved ones, contributing to a significant cause, or advancing a spiritual vision.

The profound insight here is that personal purpose is deeply individual and often transcends the job description itself. Your work truly becomes meaningful when it functions as a purposeful vehicle for your unique reason for being. It’s about achieving a powerful alignment between the daily grind and your core values, your personal “why.”

Building Purpose-Driven Organizations: Beyond Just Compensation

Grasping this essential lesson is not only crucial for individuals seeking personal fulfillment but also for leaders dedicated to cultivating thriving, high-performing organizations. In today’s dynamic and competitive talent landscape, simply offering competitive “wages” is increasingly insufficient to attract, engage, and retain top talent. The modern workforce, particularly younger generations, places a growing emphasis on meaning, impact, and an authentic connection to their work.

Organizations that master the art of fostering a sense of purpose understand that their employees arrive with a rich tapestry of motivations. A truly empowering workplace culture acknowledges and actively supports this diverse spectrum of individual purpose. This requires:

  • Articulating a Compelling Vision: Leaders must clearly and consistently communicate the organization’s overarching mission, values, and strategic goals. Crucially, they must demonstrate how every single role, no matter how seemingly small, contributes to the achievement of that larger, shared “cathedral.”
  • Recognizing and Valuing Diverse Motivations: Moving beyond a simplistic, one-size-fits-all approach to employee motivation. Effective leaders understand that some employees are primarily driven by financial stability and career progression, others by work-life balance and family commitments, and still others by the ethical impact of their work on the community or industry.
  • Empowering Autonomy and Ownership: Providing employees with a meaningful degree of control and influence over *how* they execute their tasks can dramatically boost engagement and allow them to align their work more effectively with their personal purpose and working style.
  • Fostering Continuous Growth and Development: Offering robust opportunities for skill development, learning, and career advancement signals that the company invests in its employees’ long-term well-being and is committed to helping them realize their full personal and professional potential.
  • Cultivating a Supportive and Inclusive Culture: Creating an environment where employees feel genuinely valued, respected, heard, and supported is paramount. This allows individuals to flourish, contribute their best work, and align their efforts with their personal purpose, whether that purpose is self-sufficiency, family, or a higher calling.

Your Personal Quest: Finding and Aligning Your Purpose

For individuals, the lesson from the parable is equally clear and incredibly empowering: be profoundly intentional about how and where you choose to invest the vast majority of your waking hours. Your career is far more than just a means to an income; it constitutes a significant, defining chapter in your life’s narrative. To genuinely thrive and experience deep satisfaction, ask yourself these critical questions:

  1. What is my authentic, driving purpose? Take the time for honest self-reflection. Is it financial independence, providing robust support for my loved ones, contributing to a specific cause I believe in, pursuing intellectual growth, expressing my creativity, or something else entirely? Understand your core motivators.
  2. Does my current role truly serve this purpose? Objectively evaluate how your daily responsibilities, the overarching mission of your company, and its established culture genuinely align with your personal “why.” Are you merely laying bricks, or are those bricks contributing to *your* personal cathedral?
  3. Is this environment truly enabling me to flourish? Assess whether your workplace culture fosters your holistic well-being, supports your continuous growth, and genuinely empowers you in the pursuit of your individual purpose. Or does it feel like a place where your presence is merely tolerated, rather than celebrated and cultivated?

The goal isn’t necessarily to find a job where you adore every single task or minute detail. Rather, it’s about discovering a role and an organization where the work you dedicate yourself to serves as a meaningful, impactful vehicle for achieving your deepest personal aspirations. It’s about ensuring that your efforts, your diligently laid “bricks,” are actively contributing to the magnificent “cathedral” that you genuinely envision and desire to build in your own unique life.
